In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of 28 BLACK SOUR APPLE
Opening the can, a refreshing green apple scent bursts out, and I couldn’t help but get excited—this is it!
Pouring it into a glass, it’s an apple juice-like color, a bit darker than champagne gold. It looks beautiful~ (●´ω`●)
With high expectations, I took a sip, but... huh? Something’s off.
I could tell it’s apple-flavored, but there’s an odd bitterness. This bitterness lingers throughout, and while I could smell the sweet apple aroma, the sweetness is subdued, and the acidity is strong. Unfortunately, the bitterness makes it hard to enjoy the apple flavor.
Actually, this distinct bitterness is the same one found in Rockstar’s Super Sours Green Apple from Australia. The Australian Rockstar Green Apple has a unique bitterness to it.
I started wondering if both Australia’s 28 BLACK and Rockstar’s Green Apple have this bitterness as a standard. To find out, I decided to compare it with the 28 BLACK Sour Apple from Germany.
Comparing the German and Australian Sour Apples
On the left is the Australian version, and on the right is the German version of the Sour Apple.
When lined up, the colors are nearly identical. And the aroma? To my surprise, it's the same!
Taking a sip, the taste is exactly the same. It turns out, 28 BLACK Sour Apple has this unique bitterness, so it’s not just an Australian flavor after all.
Wait... when I looked at the Australian Sour Apple more closely... "Made in Germany"
It turns out, the Australian version is simply a rebranded German 28 BLACK with a different tab color. I guess I didn’t need to compare them after all! Σ(´∀`;) But it was still nice to confirm this, and at least now I know for sure.
Regarding the flavor, as I thought, the bitterness overpowers the apple flavor, making it hard for me to enjoy. Personally, I found it undrinkable, and that distinct bitterness is unforgettable. I was excited by the initial green apple aroma, but it didn't quite live up to expectations.
Energy Ingredients of 28 BLACK SOUR APPLE
It contains 80mg of caffeine, ginseng, but no taurine.
Recently, there’s been an increase in energy drinks that highlight the absence of taurine.
And the back label.
It mentions being gluten-free, vegan, free of preservatives, and lactose-free. This might appeal to those who are particular about food choices. But with all the sugar, it’s probably best not to drink it if you're health-conscious.
Discontinuation of Sour Apple
Whether it was the bitterness or not, the Sour Apple flavor was discontinued when 28 BLACK underwent a design revamp. I wonder if there were people who liked this flavor... But 28 BLACK has many other flavors to enjoy, so I guess it’s understandable.
Now, we can’t taste that unique bitterness anymore, but if you get the chance to try Rockstar's Super Sours Green Apple from Australia, you'll get a sense of what this bitterness is like, so I recommend giving it a try.
All the Australian 28 BLACKs, including the Sour Green Apple, have gold tabs.
It gives a premium feel. Personally, I love gold tabs.
Apparently, this flavor is still sold in places like Singapore.
I wonder if they have gold tabs there too. If I ever get the chance to visit Singapore, I’ll be sure to check it out.
