In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of 28 DRINKS TONIC WATER
Looking at the ingredients, I noticed that, just like 28 DRINKS Bitter Lemon, this tonic water also contains quinine, giving it a deep, intense bitterness.
After just one or two sips, I found myself thinking, "Ah... this is amazing" (●´ω`●). This is the kind of drink I'd love to enjoy from a glass bottle.
That said, since I personally enjoy bold bitterness and richness in drinks, this might not be for everyone (^_^;)
As expected, this tonic water delivers a classic, straightforward flavor. The crisp mouthfeel is followed by a strong bitterness, creating an incredibly refreshing experience. The lingering bitterness in the aftertaste is simply irresistible—I could easily drink more than 250ml of this.
If they adjusted the quinine content to suit the Japanese market while keeping the same general flavor profile, I feel like it could gain a cult following. Of course, taste is important, but branding and image play just as big of a role.
Sometimes, people buy drinks because they can easily imagine enjoying them in a specific setting, or because a promotional campaign suggests a fun way to drink them. This is especially true in the energy drink world.
The 28 DRINKS Series Appeals to a Mature Audience
Including their main energy drink lineup, 28 BLACK, this brand seems to be crafted for those who appreciate sophisticated flavors. The can design, texture, color, taste, and aroma all feel refined—almost as if they were made to be served at a bar or restaurant. Even the official website gives off the impression that they want their brand to be perceived this way.
If you ever find yourself traveling in Europe, I highly recommend trying not just 28 BLACK’s energy drinks but also the 28 DRINKS series! ((o(´∀`)o))
