How to open a Monster Energy can without spilling (old Japan can)
Many people experience the problem of spilling Monster Energy when opening the can, and as a result, their hands get sticky. This issue is more common than I expected, so let me share a method to open it without spilling.
Energy Drink-kun (myself) has rarely spilled or caused any overflow when opening cans, so I usually open them without thinking. I’ll also explain why I do this unconsciously later.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
General Method to Open Without Spilling
First, lift the pull tab just a little to release the carbonation gas inside.
You will hear a "pffft" sound as the gas escapes. The key here is to only lift the pull tab slightly, creating a gap that's barely visible.
Next, open the right side of the can slightly, as the opening is on that side. If you open it all at once, the contents will spill out!
Even after releasing the carbonation gas, opening it too quickly will cause it to spill, so make sure to follow this step.
Then, open it all the way. Looking closely, it's filled almost to the top. If opened normally, it would spill...
The key to opening without spilling is to open it halfway after releasing the carbonation gas.
If you don't do this after releasing the gas, it won’t work!
This method can be used with other drinks like Rockstar as well—if you open them this way, they won’t spill.
Honestly, did Monster really fill it up this much? It’s filled all the way to the top (;´∀`)
With this method, you should be able to open the can without spilling, even without fixing it on a table or in an unstable position.
Why I Opened Without Spilling Naturally
I had been doing this without thinking, not just with Monster Energy in Japan, but with all energy drinks. Now I understand why I had been unconsciously opening cans without spilling.
It’s because I enjoy the aroma that comes with the carbonation release. You get to enjoy the fresh scent of the energy drink along with the carbonation (crazy, I know).
First, I enjoy the fresh scent that hasn’t touched the air, then I enjoy the color as I pour it, and finally, I enjoy the taste and aroma that escapes through my nose while drinking. I always do this when reviewing.
Personally, I love the way it bursts out in a Y-shape like this; it’s almost divine.
