What most people imagine as "types of energy drinks" likely refers to the number of energy drink products.
If we consider the number of products as the number of types, there must be tens of thousands of products already available worldwide, which would result in a disorganized list. It would become more of a product introduction rather than an introduction to types. This wouldn't accurately reflect what "types" means.
Therefore, from the perspective of an energy drink enthusiast who has tried energy drinks from all over the world, I will clearly introduce the types of energy drinks from the viewpoint of "categorizing them," rather than focusing on how many types (or products) there are.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Classification of Common Energy Drink Types
When classifying common energy drinks, they generally fall into about eight categories.
Regular Type | |
![]() |
Classic carbonated energy drinks. There are variations in taste, but most energy drinks fit into this category. |
Low-Calorie | |
![]() |
Low in sugar and calories. Many of these use artificial sweeteners. Some taste surprisingly light or focus on a refreshing taste despite being low in calories. |
Zero Zero Type | |
![]() |
Zero sugar, zero calories. A savior of the U.S. carbonated drink industry. The question “Where do the energy ingredients come from if there are zero calories?” is a topic that’s outdated, so let's not delve into it. |
Juice-Based | |
![]() |
Energy drinks with added fruit juice, offering a real fruit flavor experience. In the past, there was a powerful drink called Monster Energy M-80 with 80% fruit juice, but recently, the juice content has decreased, and 20% is now the standard. |
Coffee-Based | |
![]() |
Sweet varieties like mocha and vanilla that are often too sweet for Japanese people. In Japan, they sometimes add carbonation, turning them into unpalatable products, but globally, these are just regular coffee drinks, so don't worry. |
Tea-Based | |
![]() |
Non-carbonated iced tea types, mainly fruit teas and green teas. Many are low in calories with artificial sweeteners, offering a refreshing taste. Together with coffee, these are easy-to-drink beverages in everyday life. |
Protein | |
![]() |
High-protein energy drinks sold in the U.S., and naturally non-carbonated. Contain about 25g of protein and are popular in the fitness and bodybuilding communities, making them a true product from fitness-forward America. |
Fitness-Based | |
![]() |
Energy drinks with high caffeine, low calories, and added amino acids and creatine. They are highly effective when consumed before workouts and are treated as a separate category compared to other energy drinks. Mainly available in the U.S. |
These are the main types of energy drinks, regardless of their taste.
In Japan, there aren't as many types, so online you might see "product count = type count," which is a shame because in reality, these drinks can be classified more finely, and there are dozens of flavors under each category.
So, if you're asked, "What types of energy drinks are there?" you can answer with these eight categories.
Now, let's take a deeper dive into the flavors of energy drinks.
Energy Drink Flavor Types
The number of energy drink flavors is countless. It's safe to say that for every beverage sold worldwide, there is an energy drink counterpart. Even within fruit-flavored energy drinks, you have flavors like apple, orange, peach, grape, and more... there are countless variations even within the fruit category.
Let's broadly classify and introduce some of the main flavors. This might change your image of what energy drink flavors like Red Bull and Monster are really like.
Classic Flavors
When you think of "energy drink flavor," most people likely picture the original flavors of Red Bull and Monster Energy. At Energy Drink Mania, we call these "classic flavors." This unique, quintessential energy drink taste is a staple in almost every energy drink brand around the world, often presented as the original or classic flavor.
Juice-Based Flavors
Energy drinks with actual fruit juice added. Especially, the Monster Energy juice series is globally regarded for providing a real, rich fruit flavor, even though the juice content is only around 10%. For example, flavors like Mango Loco and Ripper (M-80), Pipeline Punch are examples of this. Although not 100% juice, these drinks are so delicious you might think they have about 70-80% juice content.
Tea-Based Flavors
Tea-based energy drinks are blended with iced tea varieties like black and green teas. Brands like Monster Rehab and Arizona are well-known examples. These drinks, inspired by regional tea traditions, offer a great introduction to unique beverages from different parts of the world. For example, Rockstar Jamaica Cooler is made with a Mexican herbal tea. Many of these drinks are low-calorie and refreshing.
Coffee-Based Flavors
Rich in distinct flavors like vanilla, mocha, and Irish blend, coffee energy drinks come in a variety of types. Well-known global brands like Monster, Rockstar, and Starbucks offer coffee energy drinks worldwide.
Coca-Cola Flavors
You might think, "Why not just drink Coca-Cola?" but globally, there are a few energy drinks with cola flavor. Once you realize that even major brands release their own unique cola energy drink flavors, you'll understand how diverse the world of energy drinks really is.
Spicy Flavors
Particularly in Japan, a country known for its advanced nutritional drinks, you will find spicy energy drinks, many of which contain ginger. They're quite spicy, too! While this trend has died down, it was quite prevalent during the energy drink boom. The strong and intense flavors are often associated with energy-boosting effects.
Energy Drink Flavors are Countless
In Japan, the typical energy drink flavor is considered the classic flavor, and the image of "energy drinks should not taste like orange or grape juice" is strong. In fact, Red Bull Japan has discontinued regular sales of the Summer Edition and Blue Edition, and seems hesitant to release limited-time flavors.
However, globally, as described above, the number of flavors is endless. Monster Energy alone has launched over 100 flavors. With products like protein and beer-flavored energy drinks, it's safe to say that energy drink flavors exist in as many
