About Energy Drink Reviews

What I Cover in My Energy Drink Reviews

  • Aroma: The scent that bursts out upon opening, when poured, and when tasted
  • Color: The appearance when poured into a glass and how it relates to the can design and product image
  • Flavor: An objective description of the taste, along with my personal impressions
  • Ingredients: Key energy drink ingredients and unique components of the product
  • Can Design: Colors, design, texture, visual effects, and size
  • Concept: The product's concept and its promotional background

These are the main aspects I focus on, and I generally follow this order. However, depending on the product, some sections may be omitted.

What I Strive for in Energy Drink Reviews

I aim to write objectively while also incorporating my personal impressions and thoughts as someone who has likely tried the most diverse range of energy drinks in Japan.

I strive for a balanced approach because simply listing product descriptions would be dull (it would be no different from copying a press release), and focusing solely on subjective opinions like "good" or "bad" would make it just another ordinary blog.

That said, if a drink tastes truly awful or is just bizarre, I might stray from this approach.

Drawing on my knowledge and experience from reviewing countless energy drinks worldwide, I highlight each product's strengths and sometimes suggest ways it could be even more interesting. I believe this perspective makes my reviews unique.

About the ★ Ratings in Energy Drink Reviews

At the end of each review, I provide a five-star rating. However, this is often misunderstood as a ranking of product superiority, so I’d like to clarify its purpose.

While some personal preferences are reflected, this rating is not a judgment of good or bad—it serves as a **barometer of the drink’s characteristics**.

  • Flavor: The gap between the name and the actual taste, and how enjoyable it is (this reflects quality the most)
  • Aroma: How well it balances with the taste (not simply based on intensity)
  • Richness: Higher for thick, intense flavors (lower for light and refreshing ones)
  • Refreshment: Higher for crisp, easy-to-drink flavors (lower for rich, heavy ones)
  • Mogu-Mogu Texture (smooth and enveloping texture): Higher for thick, substantial drinks (lower for light, watery ones)

This rating system is meant as a **guide to a drink's characteristics**, not its overall quality.

The term **"Mogu-Mogu texture"** is an original concept from **Energy Drink Mania**, and you’ll easily understand it if you try something like the original Monster Energy.

Energy Drink Mania’s Reviews Are Not the Ultimate Verdict

This goes without saying, but my reviews are not **absolute**—each person experiences flavors differently.

Taste, aroma, texture, temperature, and appearance all influence preferences. That’s why I believe **"whatever you personally feel when drinking is your own truth."** If our tastes align, you may find my reviews highly useful. Even those with different preferences have told me my descriptions match their experience, which I greatly appreciate!

For example, if you've read my reviews, you may have noticed that **I’m not a fan of spicy flavors**. Drinks like **RAIZIN, SAMURIDE, and Regain** don’t appeal to me. However, if you love spicy, tingling sensations, these drinks might be perfect for you. Please keep this in mind when reading my reviews.

I Don’t Exaggerate Energy Drink Effects

This is not about legal restrictions—I simply choose not to write things like **"This drink contains X ingredient, so it’s perfect for Y type of people"** when the actual ingredient amount is negligible or unlikely to have a noticeable effect.

If a drink is explicitly marketed as a **beauty supplement for women**, I may discuss that aspect. But in such cases, I often ask: *Is this really an energy drink, or just a beauty drink?*

That said, there are some **truly powerful** energy drinks out there, both in Japan and globally. When I encounter one, I make sure to write both **objective and subjective** observations. If you see me discussing a drink’s effects in detail, it means I genuinely felt something significant.

Major Brands Don't Get Special Treatment

Just because a drink is from a top global brand doesn’t mean I automatically praise it.

Red Bull (the world’s #1), Monster (#2), and Rockstar (#3) are well-known brands, but that doesn’t mean I assume **everything they make is amazing**. If something seems off, I’ll say so. If I find a drink **tastes bad**, I won’t hesitate to mention it.

If I were to blindly praise every major brand, Energy Drink Mania would lose its credibility as an independent review site.

While subjectivity is natural and essential for personal review styles, **I avoid excessive bias** because it would make the reviews boring for readers.

I Have No Brand Bias

I don’t collaborate with specific brands, nor am I interested in building relationships with manufacturers. Even if I happen to interact with someone from a company, I remain **100% independent** in my reviews, writing purely as an energy drink enthusiast and a regular consumer.

That said, I don’t dislike brand representatives!
I think they understand this as well. (*ノω・*)

If I think of anything else, I may update this section.
I hope this helps you better understand how I approach energy drink reviews!

Author informationAuthor: Energy Drink-kun

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
