AriZona JOLTIN’ JOE ESPRESSO

Posted on May 27, 2018 | Last updated February 14, 2025

AriZona JOLTIN’ JOE ESPRESSO
Released in 2012, this is a collaboration coffee energy drink between AriZona and MLB record holder Joe DiMaggio, called Joltin’ Joe Espresso.

It is classified as an energy drink on the official AriZona website, so I’ve decided to treat it as an energy drink here as well. By the way, it's a carbonated coffee, so it falls under the "unpalatable" category (^_^;)

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Flavor of AriZona JOLTIN’ JOE ESPRESSO

The moment I opened it, a strong carbonation and the rich scent of bitter chocolate wafted out. Since it seems to use brown sugar, that might be contributing to the aroma. The carbonation is still strong even after six years, and the can was fully pressurized before opening.

When poured into a glass, the carbonation bubbles are intense. The bubbles are not creamy, and they gradually subside, but the carbonated coffee essence is undeniable, which immediately killed my desire to drink it (ヽ´ω`).

But I try it anyway, not expecting much. The taste is quite similar to unsweetened black canned coffee, with a bit of acidity and a refreshing feel. There is no sweetness, and the bitterness is not very strong either. With each sip, the coffee flavor is accentuated by the carbonation.

It's completely unsweetened, so it’s a drinkable option for those who are not fond of the sweet American coffee energy drinks, but the strong carbonation mixes with the acidity in a way that leaves an odd aftertaste. The carbonated coffee released in Japan, Full Throttle, was extremely unpopular, and this Joltin’ Joe is almost the same. To put it simply, it’s not very good (笑).

The aroma is nice, and the lack of sweetness is a plus, but adding carbonation ruins the taste. One might say you can enjoy the sparkling freshness, but the flavor feels quite cheap, so personally, I wouldn’t recommend it. I couldn’t finish it all (^_^;)

Energy Ingredients of AriZona JOLTIN’ JOE ESPRESSO

There is no listed energy ingredient breakdown on the can itself, but after checking, I found it contains a modest 80mg of caffeine per can. It seems that no other energy ingredients are included.

This feels a bit too simplistic, and perhaps some of AriZona’s energy blend ingredients could have been included.

Design of AriZona JOLTIN’ JOE ESPRESSO Can

On the front of the can, there’s a large serious face of Joe DiMaggio, and my initial reaction was, “What is this?” After taking a closer look, I realized it’s from AriZona’s energy line, so I decided to keep it. However, it seems they couldn’t achieve the cool design like Monster’s Gronk.

On the side, there’s a small and faint profile of Joe DiMaggio standing at bat. Maybe it would have been cooler if this had been on the front?

On the other side, there are newspaper-like cut-outs depicting his MLB record of 56 consecutive games with a hit. It seems like they aimed for a retro vibe overall.

The combination of black, brown, and gold is a great choice to evoke a sense of premium quality, but considering he’s such a legendary figure, a more radiant and solid design might have been fitting.

About AriZona JOLTIN’ JOE ESPRESSO

By the way, Joe DiMaggio was born in 1914 and passed away at 84 in 1999. His MLB record of 56 consecutive games with a hit still stands today. Even Shigeo Nagashima, a baseball legend, considered DiMaggio a role model. He was known for his exceptional results and honest character. He was married to Marilyn Monroe, and after her death, he was the only one of her ex-husbands to attend her funeral. He also continued to place red roses on her grave three times a week for 20 years.

According to Wikipedia, he appeared in a coffee maker commercial and earned the nickname “Mr. Coffee.” It’s unclear if that’s why AriZona collaborated with him on a carbonated coffee, but I wish they had made a regular bitter coffee instead (´;ω;`) Ugh...
