Bacchus ENERGY DRINK

Posted on May 15, 2022 | Last updated February 2, 2025

Bacchus Energy Drink
Bacchus, a nutritional drink from South Korea, is sold in Cambodia as an energy drink for international markets. It’s said to be the original bottle-style nutritional drink in South Korea, often compared to Lipovitan D in terms of its ingredients, flavor, and design.
It’s a non-carbonated nutritional drink.

Interestingly, Cambodia is the largest export market for Bacchus ENERGY DRINK, and indeed, it was available in every store I visited. Around 200 million bottles are exported annually. In this review, I’ll be comparing the version I bought in Cambodia with one I purchased in Russia.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Flavor of Bacchus

When opened, a strong sweet and sour classic flavor aroma bursts out. Although it’s non-carbonated, the fragrance is quite prominent. The color is also a vitamin yellow that immediately reminds you of a nutritional drink.
Bacchus Energy Drink
Upon tasting, the mouthfeel is lighter than typical nutritional drinks, with a sweet and sour taste that leans towards acidity. The distinctive strong aroma of a nutritional drink stands out, and drinking 250ml in a glass might be a bit overwhelming.

While the scent is intense, the flavor itself is surprisingly mild with a smooth sweet and sour taste. You might imagine it to be intensely sour, thick, and sticky based on the smell, but it’s not as heavy as expected. However, the scent is quite strong, and while reviewing it, I realized it’s probably better to drink it straight from the can. It’s definitely easier that way Σ(´∀`;)

I also bought the Russian version of Bacchus Energy Drink when I visited Russia, so let’s compare the contents. The left one is from Cambodia, and the right one is from Russia.
Bacchus Energy Drink
The taste and ingredients are the same in both. Personally, drinking 250ml of either is quite tough for me... The room fills with the strong fragrance of Bacchus’s nutritional drink. Interestingly, Russia also has many non-carbonated energy drinks, so Bacchus’s non-carbonated formula might actually fit in some situations there.

Energy Ingredients of Bacchus

Bacchus Energy Drink
Bacchus contains 80mg of caffeine, 2000mg of taurine, 50mg of ginseng, 50mg of inositol, 20mg of lysine, and 20mg of royal jelly.
For a 250ml size, the caffeine content is average, but the taurine content is quite high—twice the usual amount. This may be a characteristic of Bacchus, which originated as a nutritional drink.

Design of Bacchus

Bacchus Energy Drink
The blue, red, and silver colors, along with the logo, are designed in a straightforward way, reflecting the original South Korean nutritional drink label on the can. It’s so similar to Lipovitan D that it’s almost startling (^_^;)

Bacchus Energy Drink
Similar to the international version of the South Korean energy drink HOT6, the front features an English logo, while the back has the Korean logo.
Bacchus Energy Drink
The Bacchus I purchased in Russia has icons for royal jelly and ginseng. The Russian-exported HOT6 also has similar icons for royal jelly and ginseng. I wonder if they are trying to evoke a sense of effectiveness with an Eastern touch?
