bang SOUR HEADS

Bang SOUR HEADS
This is a review of Bang Energy Drink’s Sour Heads. There’s also a caffeine-free version of Sour Heads, so I decided to compare both versions at the same time.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

The scent is weak, but the flavor has a strong air freshener taste

Bang SOUR HEADS
The scent is weak, and to be honest, I can’t tell what it is. For products like Bang, which are sugar-free and calorie-free, scent plays a big role, so I was surprised. After drinking many different energy drinks, I occasionally come across products like this.

When I took a sip, as the name "Sour Heads" suggests, a strong sourness spread like eating sour gummy candies. With a zero-sugar and zero-calorie drink, this sourness feels pretty bold. Usually, a little sweetness can help mask it, but this one definitely leans toward a strong sour flavor.

However, it's not just sour. It strangely has a flavor reminiscent of toilet air fresheners or room fragrances, along with an unusual bitterness (ヽ´ω`).

Normally, energy drinks may have an air freshener-like scent, but Bang Sour Heads is problematic as it’s not just in the scent but also in the flavor, which is lightly noticeable, making it quite tricky. I could feel my body rejecting it.

I thought maybe chilling it would reduce the air freshener flavor, so I gave it a shot, but there was no noticeable change. This one might be a little too much for me Σ(´∀`;).

Energy Ingredients of Bang SOUR HEADS

Bang SOUR HEADS
It contains 300mg of caffeine, creatine, BCAA, and CoQ10. If you drink other energy drinks or coffee, be careful not to consume too much caffeine.

By the way, since Sour Heads doesn’t have a strong scent, I don’t think it’ll cause any scent-related issues at the gym (*´艸`*).

Design of Bang SOUR HEADS

Bang SOUR HEADS
It has a classic black top with an orange tab. With the Bang series becoming more colorful, it would be great if they could introduce a tab color that matches the can design.

Bang SOUR HEADS
The green color and sour theme make you think of sour green apples, but it’s not quite the case due to the added flavors (^_^;). After this review, I tried drinking a chilled version of a different package of Sour Heads that I had kept for my collection. However, I still struggled with the sourness and the awkward bitterness and aroma (ヽ´ω`).

Comparison of Sour Heads and Caffeine-Free Version

Sour Heads comes in two versions: the regular one I reviewed here and a caffeine-free version. I thought the flavors would be the same, so I decided to compare them. Even after drinking both, the caffeine content remains at 300mg.

Bang SOUR HEADS
As you can see here, there doesn’t seem to be much difference, but the regular version is slightly cloudy, while the caffeine-free version is clearer.

From this angle, you can see the cloudiness in the regular version on the left. I also compared it with Bang Cotton Candy, but I didn’t notice such a color difference, so it was quite surprising.

Both versions have a mild scent, and the base sourness and air freshener-like flavor are almost the same, but the caffeine-free version has a bitterness that the regular version doesn’t have. I experienced the same bitterness with the caffeine-free version of Cotton Candy – a unique, metallic bitterness that makes it hard to continue drinking.

I don’t think there’s any need to change the taste just because of the caffeine, but it’s still there (´・ω・`).
Neither the regular nor the caffeine-free version of Sour Heads worked for my taste. However, if you get the chance, I’d recommend trying it to see if you enjoy the taste and scent.
