BIG SHOCK GOLD
BIG SHOCK, a leading energy drink brand from the Czech Republic, presents GOLD. Along with the original, it is one of the two main pillars supporting the BIG SHOCK brand.
The contents are the same flavor as the original, but the GOLD version features carbonation. It’s surprising that the original is non-carbonated, as it’s quite unusual for an energy drink brand, but the carbonated GOLD is more popular in the Czech Republic. In fact, I personally prefer the carbonated GOLD (*´艸`*)

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of BIG SHOCK GOLD
When you open the can, a tangy, classic energy drink aroma rushes out. The color of the liquid is the typical color of energy drinks. The gold color in the product name is reflected perfectly. Although the bubbles are not visible in this photo, it’s important to note that GOLD is carbonated, unlike the original.
Taking a sip, the flavor is exactly what you’d expect from a chemical-based classic flavor. It’s a balanced taste, with a slightly gentler chemical flavor compared to Rockstar, yet retaining some of Red Bull’s characteristics.
The balance of sweetness, acidity, chemical taste, and aroma is just right, so there are no unpleasant off-flavors. It’s a smooth, easy-to-drink, chemical flavor that hits the mark.
Since the flavor is close to Rockstar’s original, I wonder which one Czech people prefer, BIG SHOCK or Rockstar.
Energy Ingredients of BIG SHOCK GOLD
The energy ingredients are the standard mix: 160mg of caffeine and 2000mg of taurine, with no particularly noteworthy additional ingredients.
Being a well-established energy drink brand since 2001, BIG SHOCK has firmly established itself as an energy drink brand like Red Bull, and I think it’s amazing that they’ve continued without relying on special ingredients or materials to market their drinks.
Design of BIG SHOCK GOLD
Before trying GOLD, I was curious about what kind of flavor it would have while looking at the design. The bubbles could be a reference to the carbonation, which is a feature of GOLD, considering the original BIG SHOCK is non-carbonated.
BIG SHOCK Original is non-carbonated, after all.
GOLD is a must-have product in the BIG SHOCK lineup and is often sold alongside the original in countries outside the Czech Republic.
Limited edition designs, campaign cans, and collaboration cans are also released alongside the original.
However, recently, the designs have been unified across flavors with different color schemes, and the fun of imagining things like “Could this design represent carbonation?” has been lost.
BIG SHOCK originally had unique and interesting designs, but I personally think the design overhaul was a failure.
The tab is the signature BIG SHOCK gold tab.
While the designs for each flavor were previously different, the unified yellow base and tabs created a strong brand identity. However, as mentioned, now that the designs are the same, the special feeling has faded, and it seems like a bit of a shortcut. I hope they’ll go back to creating unique designs sometime in the future.
BIG SHOCK Bubbles
In 2020, I was able to get my hands on the 2011 release of BIG SHOCK Bubbles, the predecessor to GOLD. Since the product names are different, I thought it would be fun to compare Bubbles and GOLD side by side.
On the left is Bubbles, and on the right is GOLD. Naturally, the appearance is nearly identical. I couldn’t detect any difference in aroma either.
When I taste both, they both have the same chemical flavor. The bitter chemical taste is addictive. While there is a slight degradation in flavor, both Bubbles and GOLD are the same carbonated original flavor.
In 2020, I was able to obtain several older BIG SHOCK products from around 2010, including the non-carbonated original, and I must say, the carbonated versions definitely taste better. It seems that even in the Czech Republic, the carbonated GOLD has always been more popular.
Let’s take a closer look at the design.
The base is the same, but the “bubbles” label is so small that it’s hard to tell the difference in carbonation. The number of bubbles appears to have increased in GOLD compared to Bubbles.
The tab on this older product is a red tab.
This has become quite an obscure comparison, but as an energy drink enthusiast, I’m thoroughly enjoying it (*´艸`*)
