In March 2020, two flavors of BIG SHOCK MUSIC EDITION were released for the upcoming summer, and only PEAR MIX made a comeback for a limited release in the summer of 2024.

March 2020 marked the beginning of the pandemic, and in Europe, it felt like the entrance to a dark world. It was also the last month before Drin-kun made his global journey.

By coincidence, my trip to the Czech Republic in July 2024 coincided with the re-release of BIG SHOCK MUSIC PEAR MIX, so I was able to grab a can. It was prominently displayed in stores and easily caught my attention. The fact that the pear flavor was re-released is intriguing, so I’ll go into detail about the taste in this review.

When I opened the can, I could faintly smell a fruity, almost wine-like scent, with a hint of banana. It was hard to imagine the flavor just from the aroma, and the blue can color added to the mystery. The scent, can color, and the color of the liquid made it difficult to pinpoint the exact taste. Let’s take a sip and find out.

As soon as I took a sip, I noticed a subtle sweetness and a slight astringency, with flavors reminiscent of unsweetened apple and pear. At this point, I looked at the flavor name on the can and realized, yes, it could indeed be pear.

Generally, pear flavors are fresh with a mild sweetness and a fragrant aroma. BIG SHOCK MUSIC PEAR MIX follows this image, but it doesn't taste like a perfect pear… the reason being that it’s almost devoid of sweetness.

Because of this, the floral aroma and mildly sweet flavor that typically define pear stand out, but I couldn’t help but think it might actually be an elderflower mix. There’s just not enough of the pear-like taste.

Although I can tell it’s pear when I think about it, it’s not the usual fruity, vibrant pear flavor people expect; instead, it has a calmer, more subdued taste.

This lack of sweetness and the aroma not quite capturing the full essence of pear made me think it could be sugar-free or half-sugar, but it turns out it’s full-sugar… This taste could probably work with zero sugar, though.

It contains 160mg of caffeine and 2000mg of taurine. There are no other energy ingredients listed.

I thought it was juice-free, but it actually contains 3% pear juice. Despite the relatively mild sweetness, it has 55g of sugar, so I found myself thinking that maybe I should have gone with the zero-sugar version, BIG SHOCK PEAR FUSION, which is part of the same series.

This is a re-release of a limited edition product from 2020, but it’s not a seasonal item, so it’s labeled as “PEAR MIX LIMITED EDITION.” It's unclear why only one of the two limited-edition flavors from 2020 was re-released in 2024.

As I mentioned at the beginning, when the seasonal version was released in 2020, the pandemic hit, and I couldn’t make it to the Czech Republic. It was fortunate that the flavor I couldn’t get at the time was re-released during my 2024 summer trip. It’s rare for such things to happen.
