BIG SHOCK ENERGY Tea
BIG SHOCK ENERGY's Tea Energy. It's common for major energy drink brands to produce tea-based products, and since BIG SHOCK is a historic energy drink brand representing the Czech Republic, it's not surprising at all.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Flavor of BIG SHOCK Tea

The aroma is refreshing, with a fruity and moist peach tea scent.
BIG SHOCK ENERGY Tea
When poured into a glass, the color is a bright, transparent yellow, much like typical energy drinks. I had expected a more cloudy color from a tea flavor, but BIG SHOCK has a unique take on it. Since they’re known for bringing carbonated-free options to the table, nothing really surprises me with them anymore. Those who’ve tried various tea-flavored energy drinks might feel a bit confused at first (^_^;)

The taste is true to the scent, with a distinct refreshing peach sweetness, but it’s followed by the bitterness of catechins spreading across the mouth and nose. It’s rare to find an energy drink that emphasizes bitterness so much. If we had to give a ratio, it’s about 7 parts catechins to 3 parts peach. The flavor resembles a bitter tea beverage, like the kind found in functional health drinks, with the catechins being the dominant flavor. The taste is nothing like the peach tea flavor I initially imagined from the aroma.

The distinctive bitterness lingers in the aftertaste, staying in the mouth and nose even after just one sip. Those who dislike bitterness might struggle to finish the 500ml bottle.

I’d recommend thinking of it as a strong catechin drink with peach flavoring, rather than a peach tea. While I didn’t feel much aversion to the taste, I think the balance could have been better. Perhaps dialing back on the catechins and making it more peach-forward would likely earn more support.

Energy Ingredients of BIG SHOCK Tea

BIG SHOCK ENERGY Tea
It contains 160mg of caffeine, 2000mg of taurine, green tea extract, and 1% peach juice. The catechin flavor was definitely strong (^_^;)

Design of BIG SHOCK ENERGY Tea

BIG SHOCK ENERGY Tea
The front of the can features a beach volleyball court, surrounded by what looks like tea leaves. Fruit is also incorporated into the design, making it a unique feature of the BIG SHOCK series.

Indeed, if you’re parched from a hot beach volleyball game, you might crave a smooth, non-carbonated tea energy drink rather than a sugary carbonated beverage.

While the bitterness is strong and may turn some people away, there’s something about having a break from the usual sweet energy drinks that makes this one feel like a refreshing change. Sadly, it seems it wasn’t too popular, as after a few design updates, it was discontinued in 2018.

BIG SHOCK ENERGY Tea
It has a yellow tab, which is nice. It’s great that the brand color is consistently used in everything.
