In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of Blackout Devil
When you crack it open, it releases the expected sweet, classic flavor aroma.
When poured into a glass, the color is a standard, classic yellow. The carbonation is unusually strong... Even though the carbonation isn’t too harsh, it bubbles up quite a lot (ヽ´ω`)
It pops around the edges of the glass and even bounces back onto the can. I’d say it could be a little less intense.
Drinking it, the aroma and taste spread out lightly with a sweet flavor, and there's only a slight hint of acidity. The carbonation isn’t too strong, and there's almost no thickness, so it’s more of a light, classic flavor. However, the sweetness and aroma are strong enough that while the aftertaste doesn’t linger, you can definitely feel the presence of the Devil in your mouth.
That said, the artificial sweeteners’ sharpness, combined with the sweetness, makes it feel like a classic Zero-calorie energy drink flavor. So, if you don’t like Zero-calorie energy drinks, this may not be the one for you. On the other hand, if you enjoy the Zero-calorie classic flavors, Blackout Devil is a solid representation of that style (*´ェ`*)
Energy Ingredients of Blackout Devil
First, it contains 140mg of caffeine, 225mg of arginine, and although in very small amounts, it also contains 1.35mg of isoleucine (a type of BCAA) and 1.56mg of alanine, which is popular in muscle training. The last two are probably in such small amounts that they can be ignored?
While Blackout God was high on caffeine for a 250ml can in Japan’s energy drink market, Blackout Devil isn’t quite the same. Personally, I don’t like the trend of making drinks with higher caffeine content just for the sake of it, so I’m glad they didn’t go too far with it. I was worried that they'd try to sell high caffeine as a feature after God was released.
Blackout Series-Style Can Design
The Blackout series always has unique messaging that’s hard to interpret, but this time, it's a bit more reasonable. I wonder if there’s been a change in the person responsible for it, haha.
On the front of the can, the Devil is holding the God that was released last time...
I wonder if a drama is about to unfold, haha. It's not just about being Devil-themed, but the interaction with God adds an interesting touch. Let's look forward to what comes next, haha.
It looks like the barcode has been replaced with the Devil character. I personally think this design is much better than the bodybuilder-like silhouette from the early Blackout cans.
The pull-tab is easy to hook and open. The one on the right is Devil-themed, and the one on the left is God-themed. Personally, I prefer tabs that are easy to open, so I like this design more. I wonder if this series will continue to evolve from here?
