In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Blackout God Energy Drink Taste
The scent and color give off a strong energy drink vibe. The aroma is quite strong, but there’s no overpowering aftertaste rising from the stomach.
However, the taste is intense. The sweetness is pronounced, with a slightly tangy, classic energy drink flavor. There’s a slight chemical aftertaste and a perfume-like aroma lingering after drinking. A remnant similar to Calpis is left in the mouth, which might divide opinions. I think they probably aimed for a thicker, Mogu-Mogu texture, but it might be lingering a bit too much (;´∀`).
Blackout God Energy Drink Energy Ingredients
With 160mg of caffeine in 250ml, this is a high dose for a domestic energy drink. It’s comparable to Coffee Monster, and others like Explosion have similar caffeine content. At this point, I feel like the caffeine content is escalating too quickly, which might not be the best thing.
Other ingredients include 550mg of arginine, which is decent but not a standout. For those who just want a quick energy boost from a classic flavor, the price offers good cost-performance. Since Explosion costs around 300 yen, Blackout God, available at Don Quijote, is likely easier to purchase. If you’re looking for a high-caffeine energy drink, Blackout God could be a good choice.
The question, however, is whether the taste and brand are appealing enough to continue buying.
Blackout God Energy Drink Design
The design might feel a little over the top, but this series is generally about humor, so there's nothing too surprising. In previous Blackout series, the barcode featured a bodybuilder posing, but with God, the design includes a wrestler dressed as either a god or an angel.
The usual strange comments are here, but they’re a bit short this time. I was hoping for the usual long, rambling, meaningless concept text. That’s one of the fun parts (*´艸`*).
Looking at the back of the can first, the colors, illustrations, and design don’t scream “cool energy drink”; instead, they clearly take a unique, offbeat approach. The concept on the back is toned down, but the impact of the front design is likely enough.
It feels like the higher-tier versions of Blackout Original and Sugar-Free, but with GOD, it’s as though the Blackout series is forging a new path. If more new series come out, they might lean even further into the humor, while still maintaining high levels of unique ingredients like GOD.
Blackout God feels more like a "What is this?" product rather than just an energy drink. Yet, they’ve managed to make the ingredients fit in, which is hard to pinpoint.
