In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of Blackout Guarana
When poured into a glass, it has the signature reddish-brown color of guarana drinks, accompanied by a distinct chemical aroma.
The first sip delivers a sweet, medicine-like taste reminiscent of children's liquid medicine, followed by a strong chemical flavor. A refreshing acidity balances the sweetness, preventing it from becoming too monotonous, and fades away along with the chemical notes.
The aftertaste isn’t too heavy, but a pleasant sweet-and-sour finish with lingering chemical hints makes it quite satisfying. It’s easy to see why this drink was re-released after its initial limited run.
If you're sensitive to chemical flavors, this might be a bit hard to drink. However, for those who enjoy Dr. Pepper-style beverages, the slightly medicinal taste is just right—not too strong, but not too weak either. Try it over ice for a refreshing experience that fully enhances the addictive guarana flavor.
Ingredients of Blackout Guarana
Contains 180mg of caffeine, 620mg of arginine, 4mg of aspartic acid, 4mg of alanine, 3mg of isoleucine, along with maca and guarana.
Since the caffeine content is relatively high, it’s best to be mindful of your overall intake from other caffeinated beverages.
Design of Blackout Guarana
Originally released in 2017 and later revamped in 2019, Blackout Guarana features a bold purple design—a stark contrast to the traditional black-and-red color scheme of most guarana drinks.
As usual with the Blackout series, the poetic text on the can has been slightly altered between the original and the 2019 version. Even after two years and a redesign, its meaning remains a mystery.
The barcode design was also changed from a mysterious egg to DDT's signature wrestler.
Previously, many flavors in the Blackout series felt excessive in a 500ml can (even 250ml was a challenge at times). However, recent releases like Blackout Guarana, Blackout Loveless, and Blackout Weiss have proven to be genuinely enjoyable and easy to finish. As Japan’s energy drink market expands, the Blackout series has also been steadily improving.
Looking forward to more delicious and budget-friendly new releases in the future!
