In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of BOMBA! ENERGY ALMA zero
The moment you open it, a sweet and rich apple scent fills the air. Is this really zero!? It’s not a sour apple type but the scent of a sweet Japanese apple, so there’s no sense of it being zero.
The moment it touches your tongue, the sweetness that you expect from the initial scent vanishes, and it tastes more like a light apple flavor with just the right amount of tartness. It's like an apple-flavored water with the sweetness and richness of the apple removed and replaced with some acidity.
It doesn't try to achieve a "sugar-free but sweet" flavor. Instead, it presents a "no sugar, not sweet" taste, which is typical of some sugar-free energy drinks. However, the taste of artificial sweeteners is hardly noticeable, which is impressive because it doesn’t end up tasting like artificial sweeteners.
There’s no sweetness and no overpowering tartness, just a refreshing sour apple flavor, and it has surprisingly remained a long-seller product.
If you’re looking for a rich apple flavor with sweetness, this isn’t for you. However, the overall quality as a sugar-free drink is very high. I’m impressed with how they managed to eliminate the aftertaste of artificial sweeteners.
Energy Ingredients in BOMBA! ENERGY ALMA zero
It contains 37.5mg of caffeine, which is on the lower side. There are no special energy ingredients.
I was curious about the lack of artificial sweetener taste, but after checking the ingredients, I see that aspartame K is included. Even though it’s obvious there must be sweeteners, the lack of an off-taste makes the sour apple flavor incredibly clear.
Design of BOMBA! ENERGY ALMA zero
The design is simple, featuring an apple illustration and the words “ALMA (meaning apple) zero.” It looks cheap, but considering it’s a budget energy drink priced around 70 yen, I don’t mind much.
Interestingly, I thought there might be a sugared version of BOMBA! ENERGY ALMA, but it seems there’s only the sugar-free option. The fragrance has a real fruity vibe, and if it were sweetened, it could easily become one of the top apple flavors worldwide.
