The color is lighter and more transparent than expected, a bright red. I had anticipated a more intense red-purple shade.

Upon tasting, the flavor is sweet cherry with a rich honey or caramel-like thickness and sweetness. There's no real cherry fruitiness; it tastes like a concentrated, cooked sweetness. In fact, it has a bit of a heavy feel, unlike the usual light, fizzy sodas.

There’s virtually no acidity in this cherry, so if you're expecting a sweet and sour cherry flavor, this might not be what you were hoping for.

A flavor similar in richness (aside from the aroma) would be the Austrian-exclusive RED BULL WINTER EDITION 2016 Zwetschke-Zimtnelke. This is a flavor best enjoyed slowly, allowing you to savor it, rather than something you’d drink for a refreshing experience.

MEGGY’s focus is solely on the sweet, rich side of things, but it lacks the refined aroma or lingering aftertaste. It’s a shame, but given the low price point of the brand, I suppose it’s understandable. However, BOMBA! also offers more refined flavors, like BODZA and MOJITO, which are priced around 500 yen and are on par with higher-end offerings, proving that the brand is not just about low-quality products.

The red and black color scheme reflects the rich sweetness of the cherry flavor, creating a fitting visual.

The silhouette of a cherry, along with the "MEGGY" name and other language details, decorate the can. Unfortunately, there's no Japanese on the can, which might be a hint about the target market Σ(´∀｀；).

Comparison with the Old MEGGY

I had the old MEGGY in the classic design as well (I had completely forgotten about it), so let's compare the new and old versions.

The contents are the same in both cans. Surprisingly, even the 2014 version of the old MEGGY showed minimal signs of degradation. Since there’s no fruit juice in it, there’s no worry about taste changes over time.

Personally, I find the classic old design much cuter and end up staring at it (*´艸｀*)

The back of the cans shows different ingredient lists as well. The old design feels more cherry-forward, which I like. However, the modern design is much more polished, so it might appeal more to newer BOMBA! fans rather than the die-hard energy drink collectors who have been drinking it since its early days.
