BOOSTER THE REAL COLA
BOOSTER, a low-cost energy drink brand from Germany, released THE REAL COLA in 2018. While it is not part of their energy drink lineup, I'll review it as part of the long-standing BOOSTER series.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of BOOSTER THE REAL COLA
As soon as you open the can, a burst of cola aroma rushes out. Surprisingly, it doesn't have the typical cheap cola scent—it smells almost identical to regular cola. And this costs just 35 yen.
When poured into a glass, the carbonation is intense at first, but by the time you're ready to drink, most of it has dissipated, leaving a mildly fizzy texture. The flavor resembles a sweet Pepsi-style cola.
If it had stronger carbonation, it would be refreshing enough to rotate alongside Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and BOOSTER Cola. If only the carbonation were stronger... As it stands, it's essentially a flat Pepsi.
That said, it doesn't have the typical watered-down taste or acidity of cheap colas. It's a well-crafted cola flavor. The last time I had an energy-style cola this good was Finland’s Mad-Croc Cola. After writing this review, I checked local reviews and was surprised to see how well received it is.
You could say it’s a blatant copy of the two major cola brands, but personally, I prefer this approach over a cola with a forced, artificial uniqueness. Sometimes, sticking to the classic taste is the best choice.
Energy Ingredients of BOOSTER THE REAL COLA
BOOSTER THE REAL COLA isn’t part of the energy drink lineup—it's a caffeine-boosted cola.
It contains 82.5 mg of caffeine, but no other major energy ingredients.
BOOSTER products vary slightly in energy ingredients, but they typically contain caffeine and taurine. THE REAL COLA, however, has no taurine and slightly less caffeine than their energy drink line—nothing more than that. Since BOOSTER drinks aren’t packed with complex ingredients to begin with, the difference in effect between THE REAL COLA and their energy drinks is probably negligible.
Design of BOOSTER THE REAL COLA
The BOOSTER series is known for its signature burst-pattern design, but this one feels more toned down. This more natural approach makes it look less cheap.
I wonder what this illustration and "The Real" are supposed to mean. Looking at the back...
Ah, so the name is simply "The Real Cola." Surprisingly, it looks quite nice.
On the side of the can, there’s a poem—something you don’t find on the main BOOSTER series.
The ingredient label also has a white streak that looks like peeling tape, giving it a slightly more designed feel compared to regular BOOSTER products.
A black top with a red tab. Even for a cola that costs just 35 yen, no detail is overlooked.
BOOSTER is known for its ultra-cheap energy drinks. You’d think they would just release a cola-flavored energy drink, but perhaps even that wouldn’t be cheap enough to sell well. Thinking about it, if you were in Japan and had 200 yen to spend, you’d probably buy a 1.5L bottle of Coca-Cola for around 160 yen rather than a cola-flavored energy drink. Who knows what BOOSTER was thinking when they decided to release THE REAL COLA.
THE REAL COLA has been on the market for quite some time, and the 1L PET bottle version is still available. Maybe it attracts people who want a little more caffeine than a regular cola provides.
The global giant Coca-Cola vs. Germany’s budget brand THE REAL COLA—these kinds of playful product ideas are what make overseas brands so fun.
I really like this approach—building a brand steadily without relying on extreme sports sponsorships or flashy marketing.
