Posted on April 22, 2020 | Last updated February 8, 2025

BOOSTER THUNDER STORM
BOOSTER THUNDER STORM is a staple product from the German low-priced energy drink brand BOOSTER. Unfortunately, it was discontinued about two years after its release.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Flavor of BOOSTER THUNDER STORM

As soon as the can is opened, a burst of apple scent emerges. Before reviewing BOOSTER THUNDER STORM, I had actually tried BOOSTER GREEN GRASS (apple mint flavor), so I thought the apple scent here was even more typical of an apple flavor than the one in BOOSTER GREEN GRASS.

BOOSTER THUNDER STORM
The color is a bright, light yellow, almost the same as the can. When poured into a glass, a weird odor starts to develop, and I began to wonder if it had gone bad...

The odor persists when drinking, but the flavor itself is a mix of apple-like fruitiness, acidity, and bitterness, along with a tropical fruit flavor reminiscent of dragon fruit and passion fruit.

The musty smell, similar to something that has dried out, is unpleasant. It’s a scent that sometimes appears in a mix of tropical fruits, and I can't quite place it. I remember having that smell from real fruit before, and it’s unpleasant enough that it affects how I enjoy the other fruits. Maybe it’s a result of oxidation after cutting the fruit. I'm not sure what it is.

Despite the fact that this might be a somewhat faithful recreation of that unpleasant smell from real fruit, I couldn't continue drinking it.

Looking at the back of the can, it’s labeled as "apple kiwi flavor." The smell doesn’t quite match kiwi, though... but the flavor is definitely closer to apple. That unpleasant smell is too strong, so there's no chance I’m going for a second can.

Energy Ingredients of BOOSTER THUNDER STORM

BOOSTER THUNDER STORM
It contains 105.6 mg of caffeine, 1320 mg of taurine, and guarana. There are no special ingredients, but for just 70 yen, that’s enough.

Design of BOOSTER THUNDER STORM

BOOSTER THUNDER STORM
The can is entirely yellow with the BOOSTER series’ trademark burst design. Since the drink inside was almost the same color, I was curious about the flavor of "Thunder Storm." The taste, however, was somewhat disappointing.

Released around the same time as Green Grass, both were rather lackluster products that were discontinued after a few years on the market. Well, the outcome was inevitable.
