Super Mario Energy Drink
If you're interested in overseas energy drinks, you've probably seen this one somewhere—the Super Mario Energy Drink!
It’s part of the energy drink series produced by Boston America, a company known for manufacturing toys and merchandise. Although the Mario version is now discontinued, they have been releasing various officially licensed collaboration energy drinks for over a decade.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of Mario POWER UP Energy Drink
When I opened the can, a faint sweet, traditional energy drink scent immediately filled the air. From the smell, it was clear that this was a typical classic flavor. In cases like this, especially with collaboration energy drinks, it's hard to avoid the feeling of disappointment. "Oh, they just put this out..." is the vibe I get.
When I poured it into a glass, the drink had a yellow color typical of energy drinks. The scent was sweet, but it wasn't as enveloping or overpowering as Monster Energy Original.
Upon tasting, the sweetness was mild, and the flavor was a classic style with a noticeable tang, quite similar to Red Bull. Although the taste itself wasn't sweet, the strong sweet scent that spreads in your mouth makes it feel a little too rich. I realized just how strong the sweet aroma is while drinking.
The scent has a slightly artificial, almost perfume-like quality that makes it a bit unusual for a drink. The overly sweet fragrance combined with the tangy classic flavor doesn't quite balance out. It feels a little off since the taste itself isn't sweet, which creates a sense of discomfort. It seems like they tried to get close to a typical energy drink taste and scent. At the end of the day, it feels more like a novelty item for fans rather than something to buy as an energy drink.
By the way, the Mario energy drink I had seen before was a light pink color, not yellow like the one I opened here. It’s quite different, and the taste might also be different. There could be a labeling error—perhaps the wrong contents were packaged with the Mario label. Based on several overseas review videos, it's clear that the product inside this can differs, so I'll focus on reviewing this particular version. (^_^;)
Energy Ingredients of Mario POWER UP Energy Drink
With 120mg of caffeine, 1000mg of taurine, 50mg of inositol, 25mg of guarana, and 25mg of ginseng, this blend looks pretty standard, much more like a regular energy drink than a novelty item.
Most of these collaboration energy drinks, including Mario, are produced by Boston America, and the ingredient list is the same for all their products. So, we at Energy Drink Mania decided to refer to these products’ energy blends as the "Boston America Energy Blend."
Energy Drink Series Rarely Seen in Stores
Though I've seen Mario and other character-themed energy drinks online, I’ve never actually come across them in a store. They’re not sold in convenience stores or supermarkets.
I was lucky enough to get a set of them when I traveled to the U.S. a few years ago, where I was given a full set of stock.
Since Boston America is not an energy drink or food manufacturer but rather a company specializing in kids' toys and merchandise, these drinks are likely only found in toy stores or game sections. If you’re curious, Boston America has stores across the U.S., so you can search for them while shopping during your travels.
I was also curious about the licensing aspect, and it seems they have an official contract. In addition to energy drinks, they’ve been selling character merchandise like candy and toys since 1995. It’s fascinating to learn these things when you look into them! I had assumed it was just some pirated knockoff product. Σ(・∀・;)
The pull tab is, of course, the standard silver tab. This product seems more like a fun novelty item, so there's no need for any special features here. Still, it’s pretty amusing to have a Super Mario energy drink. The idea works well as a novelty, and the energy drink concept pairs nicely with the Mario brand. Other Boston America energy drink series also offer some interesting and fun products.
