SAMURAI ENERGY DRINK ORIGINAL
The original SAMURAI ENERGY DRINK, one of Coca-Cola's energy drink brands sold in Vietnam and Cambodia. As of 2023, it has almost disappeared from store shelves, but according to the official information, it seems to still be on sale.
The version I'm reviewing here is the Vietnamese one, characterized by the same logo and font design as the one used for Coca-Cola's previous product, burn. (The Cambodian version has a different design.)

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of SAMURAI ENERGY DRINK ORIGINAL
When opened, it has a sweet, energy drink-like aroma. Although it is labeled as a fruity flavor, the scent is more like a sugary, vitamin-infused energy drink with a strong, sweet, Southeast Asian-style fragrance rather than fruit.
Upon tasting, it has a rich flavor similar to fruit syrup from a can, with a hint of a medicinal taste, almost like a sweet medicine.
This is a classic fruity flavor, mixing pineapple, banana, peach, mango, and papaya with a chemical aftertaste to create the SAMURAI ENERGY DRINK ORIGINAL. It is mildly carbonated, with the aroma standing out, but its rich taste overwhelms the senses with its strong punch.
It has the typical "yellow type" energy drink flavor commonly found in Southeast Asia. If you've tried other yellow energy drinks from Southeast Asian brands, you can easily imagine a similar taste.
Energy Ingredients of SAMURAI ENERGY DRINK ORIGINAL
It contains 116mg of caffeine and 234mg of taurine, along with a typical mix of B vitamins.
As an energy drink aimed at the Southeast Asian market, it has a high sugar content, with 58g of sugar in a 390ml can. This translates to over 75g per 500ml, which is an exceptional amount. It's important to be cautious about overconsumption.
Design of SAMURAI ENERGY DRINK ORIGINAL
The same flame logo used on Coca-Cola's burn is featured on the packaging, and the "SAMURAI" font is also the same as the one used for burn in its final Coca-Cola iteration.
The Vietnamese version of SAMURAI ENERGY DRINK is sold in plastic bottles (and was once available in cans) with a design similar to Coca-Cola's burn for the Southeast Asian market.
SAMURAI ENERGY DRINK has been available in Cambodia since around 2002, and back then it had a cheap impression with only an illustration of a samurai.
Even today, the Cambodian version doesn't use the burn-style design, so it might look like a minor brand when seen in stores.
The energy drink brands previously sold by Coca-Cola have now been integrated into Monster Energy.
Although this SAMURAI ENERGY DRINK is also released by Monster Energy, it is a rare product that continues to use the burn logo from Coca-Cola's era, unlike the original burn series, which changed its logo after the shift to Monster Energy.
