Coca Cola ENERGY (International Version)

Posted on October 25, 2019 | Last updated February 9, 2025

Coca Cola ENERGY (International Version)
Coca Cola Energy, which is being released around the world. I considered comparing it with several countries' versions, but it would never end, so I’ll focus on the UK version of Coca Cola Energy as a representative and review it.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Same as Japan, but with Something Missing in the Original Coke Flavor

Coca Cola ENERGY (International Version)
The color in the image is a deep cola-like shade, but in reality, it’s a light barley tea color.

Let’s try it right away. The first impression is, of course, “a watered-down cola flavor.” The sweetness of cola is suppressed, and the aftertaste is a sour, cola-gummy-like flavor. It feels like a cola made by another company that didn’t quite manage to replicate the original Coke. This is the same as Japan's Coca Cola Energy.

While it's not fair to compare it to the original Coca Cola, it makes me realize just how perfectly the original Coke is made.

Considering personal preference and price difference, I think many would feel, “If I’m going to buy Coca Cola Energy, I’d rather go for the original Coca Cola” or “Coca Cola is good enough.”

Comparing Japan and the UK Coca Cola Energy

Coca Cola ENERGY (International Version)
The color of the contents is, of course, the same. As for the can design, Japan’s red top has a more vibrant, standout feel.

Since the ingredient amounts are the same, the taste is naturally the same as well, but I felt the Japanese version has a slightly stronger flavor with a more pronounced sourness. There also seems to be a slight difference in the flavoring. That said, the taste difference is minimal, and after switching back and forth between the two, I honestly couldn’t tell if there was any real difference.

The colors are almost identical, but the UK version on the left has a slight cloudiness, whereas the Japanese version has more transparency. This might be due to differences in coloring agents. This level of cloudiness is subtle enough that you wouldn’t notice unless you compare them side by side.

Even though I knew this is a globally common product, I compared them and found that both have a light taste but leave a sour aftertaste, which detracts from the refreshing or invigorating feeling. I don’t think I’ll be getting this again.

Energy Ingredients of Coca Cola ENERGY (UK Version)

Coca Cola ENERGY (International Version)
It contains 80mg of caffeine and guarana, among other ingredients. The calories, carbohydrates, and other ingredients seem to be the same as in Japan and other countries.
Taurine is not included, which seems to be the case globally.

Design of Coca Cola ENERGY Worldwide

Generally, the design is almost the same worldwide. The can features a red, twisting curve design with the word "ENERGY" in white.
Coca Cola ENERGY (International Version)
The standard can size is 250ml worldwide, though some countries or regions offer 330ml, 355ml, or Japan’s 190ml mini size. As of now, the Coca Cola Energy design is consistent across all versions.

In Europe, you might see a logo for the ingredient list, while in other regions, the barcode includes Coca Cola’s signature curve design. It’s interesting to see such regional variations in the back designs.

Tabs also vary by country or region. The UK version I reviewed has a standard silver top with a red tab.
Coca Cola ENERGY (International Version)
Because the manufacturing plants differ by country, the shape and color of the tabs also vary.

This is a squat 250ml can from Vietnam. Even though it’s the same 250ml size, it’s shorter with a wider body.
Coca Cola ENERGY (International Version)
The shape is different from a typical 250ml can, giving it quite a different impression.

The taste is honestly too weak for regular consumption, but it might be fun to visit various countries and collect Coca Cola Energy from all over the world as they’re released almost simultaneously everywhere. (I’ve already started doing so.)
