AMP GAME FUEL and RAZER RESPAWN – Are They Energy Drinks?
Around 2018, gamer-focused drinks started to spread mainly in the United States. When these are introduced on general websites, there are articles that label them as "energy drinks" and others that refer to them as "gamer drinks." In Japanese articles, it seems like they are more often labeled as energy drinks.
As I mentioned in the article "What is an Energy Drink", and have also written about it in magazines, it’s clear that if something does not have the label of an energy drink, it’s not an energy drink. AMP GAME FUEL and RAZER RESPAWN do not fall under the category of energy drinks.
With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at AMP GAME FUEL and RAZER RESPAWN.
Author: Energy Drink-kun
In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
AMP GAME FUEL
AMP GAME FUEL has a design that’s different from the usual AMP series, and the addition of a re-cap structure makes it an interesting product.
However, AMP GAME FUEL does not have the label of an energy drink, and even officially, as well as within the Mountain Dew community, it is recognized as a "gamer's drink," with the word ENERGY not even being mentioned. Although it has the design of an energy drink, it doesn't fit that category.
It seems that the AMP GAME FUEL team has made a clear distinction and is positioning AMP GAME FUEL as a gamer-specific, gamer-targeted brand.
They have even trademarked "GAME FUEL," which shows they are serious about pushing this as a "gamer's drink."
RAZER RESPAWN
RAZER RESPAWN started as an April Fools' joke about RAZER creating a gamer-focused drink, but it eventually became a product, aligning with the recent trend of gaming fuel. It’s a true-to-form gamer’s drink.
By the way, this is not in a can or bottle but rather a powder that you mix with water. Considering the rise of e-Sports, this genre likely has a steady demand, and just being a RAZER product is likely to attract attention.
I haven’t seen the actual product yet, so I can’t be sure, but based on the product images, it appears that RAZER RESPAWN is not an energy drink, but rather marketed as a "mental performance drink" for gamers. The official website does not mention anything about it being an energy drink.
While Japanese news articles often label RAZER’s product as an "energy drink," this is less common in international media (though some still do).
In fact, there are American articles that explicitly state that "RAZER RESPAWN is not an energy drink, but a gamer’s drink." I also feel that RAZER RESPAWN, just like AMP GAME FUEL, is not an energy drink.
Simply Labeling It as 'Energy Drink' Gains More Attention
As a writer, I understand that the term "energy drink" catches attention and has high buzz potential. A term like "gaming-specific energy drink" easily generates conversations on social media, so it's tempting to use it. You’ll often see rewrite articles pop up after reading news articles like this one.
However, the manufacturers deliberately avoid using the "energy drink" label, showing that they have a strong focus on their gamer-targeted products.
Unfortunately, here at Energy Drink Mania, we generally do not cover anything that isn’t strictly an energy drink. So, for now, there are no plans to review AMP GAME FUEL or RAZER RESPAWN.
