The ranking dropped due to Google's June core algorithm update.

Posted on July 4, 2019 | Last updated February 16, 2025

This is not related to energy drinks, but it's about site management, so it might sound a bit unclear... (;´∀`)

Google Search Ranking

On June 4, 2019, Google updated its core algorithm that determines search rankings, implementing a global evaluation system that differs from the previous ranking criteria. There was also a core algorithm update in March, and during that time, Energy Drink Mania experienced noticeable fluctuations in rankings.

However, the June 4 core algorithm update had an unusually significant impact, and the site is now nearly destroyed.

Previously, when searching for "energy drinks," Energy Drink Mania fluctuated around positions 1-3. However, after the core algorithm update, the site is now floating around positions 60-80. Other energy drink-related keywords have also dropped significantly. It's quite shocking... It's disappointing that Google doesn't understand the content.

There were even reports abroad of sites shutting down due to this update.

By the way, the review of Coca-Cola Energy, which was released on July 1, has been viewed somewhat on social media, but it doesn't appear in search results Σ(´∀`;)

Review

I believe there is almost no site in Japan or even the world that goes into as much detail about energy drinks as we do... But when you search now, primarily high domain score sites with thin one-page feature articles dominate, and the general perception is that "energy drinks are dangerous" or "too many energy drinks" type of articles, which continue to rank highly due to their alignment with common search intentions.

We Must Make the Site Even Better

Google is useless!!!!... But simply complaining doesn't help, so we are gradually improving by revising past articles, linking related reviews and articles to explanation or column pages, improving mobile navigation, and enhancing site usability internally.

However, no matter how much we improve the site internally, I believe the evaluation criteria are still largely biased toward "how many links there are." So, even if the content is deep and well-crafted, it’s still difficult to beat highly reputable sites with high domain scores, both before and after this core algorithm update.

Fortunately, in the case of Energy Drink Mania, when we tweet updates on Twitter, there are people who still check it out, so we're managing to hold on. But if we weren’t on social media, the number of visitors would have drastically decreased, and the motivation to run the site would have been lost.

From now on, I will continue adding new reviews, revising and improving existing pages, and keep working on improvements until the next core algorithm update. Honestly, I feel that under the current algorithm, the evaluation is leaning more toward "bad" than "good" (ヽ´ω`)

It's completely a wait for the core algorithm update. Looking forward to it!!!

≪OLD I witnessed that "people don't look at the content when retweeting." With the Google algorithm update in September, 80% of the ranking has been restored. NEW≫

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
