The issue of not being able to finish a 500ml energy drink.

Posted on December 2, 2021 | Last updated February 16, 2025

The other day, I reviewed the ZONe ENERGY GEAR Energy Jelly.

It tasted significantly better than the 500ml ZONe Energy Drink, likely due to the flavor adjustment and the difference in how the jelly is consumed. But more than anything, the 180g size, which felt like just the right amount, was perfect.

This also applies to energy drinks: there aren’t many products worldwide that you can finish all 500ml of while enjoying it. You get bored halfway through. With some, you get bored after just a few sips.

There are surprisingly few energy drinks with such excellent flavors that you can’t resist drinking them, even though they contain unnecessary carbs that you don’t need.

In Japan, the 250ml size of energy drinks has become a "mini size," and at 200 yen, it feels overpriced. Personally, I think 250ml is just the right size, but it seems like the Japanese energy drink scene has gone in a somewhat awkward direction in terms of size and price.

500ml is just too much, you get tired of the taste halfway through, and if you’re consuming around 60g of carbs, it limits when you can drink it... After thinking about it, I hope that 250ml-sized energy drinks will be offered in about half of the products available.

What I usually drink are 250ml Red Bull or 190ml low-cost domestic energy drinks. Considering my daily workout and metabolic activity, this size is just right for me when drinking as a treat.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
