effect energy WATERMELON SPLASH
Released in April 2022 as a summer edition, effect energy WATERMELON SPLASH is a watermelon-flavored energy drink.
Though it may not be obvious from the packaging, this is a zero-sugar watermelon flavor.
I picked this up during my trip to Germany in 2023. At launch, there was no announcement of it being a limited edition, but it has since disappeared from the official website. As of 2024, it seems to have been discontinued. By 2023, I had already stopped seeing the 500ml cans, so they might have sold out back then.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of effect energy WATERMELON SPLASH
When opened, a sweet fragrance fills the air, accompanied by a strong, somewhat greenish melon-like scent. It’s not just a vegetal smell, but also the sweet aroma of watermelon flesh, which is characteristic of this drink.
Upon tasting, the flavor is light and refreshing, with a subtle sweetness and no noticeable acidity. It is much lighter in taste than the fragrance would suggest.
Strictly speaking, the watermelon flavor is recreated more through the scent than the taste, and it lacks both sweetness and acidity, making it a very smooth flavor.
The aftertaste is clean and doesn’t linger, with a light, slightly greenish note of watermelon aroma. It’s so subtle that you barely notice the taste. There’s no unpleasant aftertaste from artificial sweeteners, and it feels more like a flavored water with a slight taste.
The reason it feels like a watermelon flavor is that, as mentioned earlier, the aroma includes both the greenish undertones and a sweet scent that reminds you of fresh watermelon flesh.
For those who may feel the taste is almost nonexistent, it’s understandable. Energy drinks are often associated with strong flavors, so those people may not rate this highly.
Personally, I like this extremely light watermelon flavor. Considering the balance of the subtle taste, fragrance, and overall drinkability, I’d say this is a very well-made watermelon-flavored energy drink that exceeds average expectations.

It contains 105.6mg of caffeine, taurine, glucuronolactone, 33mg of ginseng, 33mg of guarana, and 132mg of carnitine.
Design of effect energy WATERMELON SPLASH
The effect brand’s dot pattern is applied to the watermelon rind. The combination of a red can with green accents instantly signals that this is a watermelon-flavored drink, even without reading the product name.
The red portion of the can has a textured, rough feel.
While the lower part of the can displays the product name “WATERMELON SPLASH,” the upper green part also includes the name along with a list of energy ingredients.
Often, the bottom of the can is covered with price tags or promotional labels, so it’s not always visible. However, this design clearly conveys the watermelon flavor just by looking at it, and I appreciate that the product name is clearly displayed in an easy-to-read location.
