In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Why Was This Made? It's Terrible
I had heard various rumors that this wasn't suited for "Drin-kun," but setting those aside, I thought I'd give it a try and see for myself.
When I opened the can, I smelled a sweet, classic fragrance. However, as I was enjoying that aroma, an intense spicy kick hit my nose. The smell is overwhelming... (ヽ´ω`)
The color is just like cola. The carbonation is quite strong and bubbles up in the glass.
When I took a sip, before I even tasted it, the scent pierced my nose and I couldn't stop sneezing! I understand if the carbonation is fizzing in the glass, but that's not the case here. The spiciness hits your nose as soon as it touches your lips...
The taste is a mix of sweet, classic flavors and cola-like notes, but the overpowering spiciness and the harsh sensation in my nose make it undrinkable. Especially at room temperature, the sweetness feels lukewarm, and with the intense spiciness, I lost the will to continue after the first sip (ヽ´ω`).
If you add more ice, it becomes much more diluted and easier to drink, but simply chilling it in the fridge doesn't help—it's the same as at room temperature, with the moment it touches your mouth, the spiciness attacks your nose. Since "Drin-kun" is terrible with spicy things, this has become one of the energy drinks I never want to drink again.
Energy Ingredients of Baki Energy Drink
The drink contains 135mg of caffeine, 300mg of arginine, guarana, and maca. The ingredients are typical of other energy drinks from different brands.
But what is this overpowering spiciness... I think it’s ginger, but there’s no mention of it. Among the few energy drinks in this tiny island country, why is there such a high rate of spicy energy drinks?
Design of Baki Energy Drink
The can design perfectly matches the fiery, intense taste. It's easy to recognize since it's a Baki merchandise item. Since it's a fan item, there's no need for extra detail, and I think the design is standard.
However, it would have been nice to see a message or something that appeals to fans on the back or to have the pull tab match the can's red color. These kinds of products and other domestic brands don't spend money on those little details, but fans would definitely react with, "Oh!" to those kinds of touches. If products like that come out in the future, it could be really fun (●´ω`●).
