In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of Calpis Soda ENERGY EX Lemon
The first release of Calpis Soda Energy EX had such a strange taste that it made me wonder why they chose that flavor. It seemed like they were intentionally trying to make it more like an energy drink, and the result was quite disappointing. But what about this lemon flavor?
When poured into a glass, it has a milky white color mixed with cream, typical of a lemon flavor. Although I thought it would be more lemon-colored, the color is actually very similar to the original Calpis Soda Energy EX. Maybe it's just a little darker yellow? The color difference between the normal and lemon flavors isn’t very noticeable. It would’ve been more distinct if the normal one had been whiter... (laughs)
The scent is dominated by the classic Calpis aroma, with only a faint lemon fragrance in the background. At this point, the lemon flavor isn't very pronounced.
I wasn’t expecting much, but when I tasted it, I was surprised—it’s actually quite good. It’s turned into a normal, tasty Calpis soda, with none of the disappointment I felt from the original Calpis Soda Energy EX.
The lemon flavor isn’t very strong, but it gives a refreshing taste. Unlike drinks like CC Lemon Energy or Energy, which have an overly sour lemon flavor, this one is mild. Basically, it’s just like drinking regular Calpis Soda, with its typical taste and fragrance Σ(´∀`;)
Since the main flavor is Calpis, it’s not particularly refreshing, and the aftertaste lingers in your mouth. Without that Calpis aftertaste, it might have been a bit lighter, but if it didn’t leave any aftertaste, the flavor would feel less present. Considering the overall experience, I think this is a pretty good Calpis Soda flavor (*´ェ`*)
Energy Ingredients of Calpis Soda ENERGY EX Lemon
As advertised, it contains plenty of vitamin C, ranging from 9.5 to 43.7mg, though the amount varies a lot (^_^;)
However, compared to other vitamin C drinks from different brands, which often contain up to 1000mg of vitamin C, it’s not packed with vitamin C.
It also contains 325mg of arginine, 15.2mg of leucine, 13.3mg of isoleucine, and 9.5mg of valine from BCAA, but the amounts are so small that they’re not worth focusing on. And like the original version, it's caffeine-free.
It Would Have Been Better If It Was 250ml
The taste is much better than the previous one and feels more like a normal Calpis Soda, which is nice. It’s easy to drink without any odd aftertaste.
However, the size has somehow been reduced to 190ml... It’s a bit disappointing for collectors, especially since the flavor is expanding but the size keeps changing. I really wish they had released it in a 250ml can.
Since it’s easier to drink now, and it’s being released in the summer, a 190ml can feels a bit too small. I wonder why they went with the 190ml size.
The design of Calpis Soda ENERGY EX Lemon follows the same style as the previous version, with a touch of yellow. If new flavors are introduced in the future, it will look even better ((o(´∀`)o))
As for its promotion as an energy drink, it’s a bit lackluster—it's only available at Lawson without much fanfare. But if they switched to a 250ml can with the same price and added more flavors, it could become more interesting.
