CRAFT ENERGY N1

Posted on January 19, 2025 | Last updated January 27, 2025

Craft Energy N1
This is a review of "Craft Energy N1," a non-caffeinated energy drink with 9 types of spices, released by Pokka Sapporo in March 2023.

I wasn’t initially drawn to it due to the mention of spices, herbs, and craft cola. Before I knew it, it was discontinued. I managed to grab some at a discounted price at Jason's store. So, here's my review a bit late to the game.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Flavor of Craft Energy N1

Upon opening the can, a distinctive herbal bitterness mixed with a cola gummy-like scent fills the air. Ah, I see, this is the "craft cola flavor." Let's give it a try.
Flavor of Craft Energy N1
As I take a sip, the taste of cola gummies spreads on my tongue with a clear and light texture. The herbal and medicinal aromas take over, similar to the strong, old-fashioned herbal throat lozenges that hit the nose.

It’s a sugar-free, herbal cola gummy flavor with a light touch. Although it claims to use “original spice extract,” there’s no spiciness, so even those who are sensitive to spice should find it drinkable.

The herbal bitterness in the aroma instantly makes me want to stop drinking—it’s a unique flavor. While marketed as craft cola, it lacks the rich flavor, sweetness, or refreshing qualities of a classic cola like Coca-Cola. Instead, it has the taste and scent of herbal or medicinal drinks.

This is a typical example of a product with too much of a unique twist, which, in my case, leads to a "bad taste" experience. It's no surprise this drink found its way to the discounted shelves at Jason's...

On the other hand, if you’re a fan of herbal, medicinal, or spiced flavors, this might be perfect for you. Despite being caffeine-free, the bitterness and earthy notes from the herbs or spices may appeal to those who enjoy a more grounded "energy drink effect."

Energy Ingredients of Craft Energy N1

Contains cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, clove, cumin, oregano, garlic, and dried tangerine peel. No caffeine.

Design of Craft Energy N1

The red can prominently features the product name "N1," along with an easily recognizable herbal image. According to Pokka Sapporo representatives, "N1" is named after both "naturalism" and "No.1" for a natural energy drink.
Design of Craft Energy N1
The clear display of terms like "Craft Energy," "Natural Energy Drink," and "Craft Cola Flavor" effectively communicate the product's features.

Despite having a lot of elements, the layout and color combination are beautifully organized, making all the information easy to understand.
Design of Craft Energy N1
The "SPICE FACTORY" logo is prominently placed in the center, and the can features a subtle spice silhouette throughout.

"SPICE FACTORY" is a brand inspired by a spice manufacturer that became part of the Pokka Sapporo group. This brand logo isn't exclusive to Craft Energy N1 and may be used for other beverages in the future.

Upon closer inspection, the herb silhouette is beautifully and intricately designed. The red of the can, combined with the fine gold silhouette, gives a rich and premium feel.
Design of Craft Energy N1
While the flavor was not to my taste, the design definitely left a positive impression.

Design of Craft Energy N1
Since this is a very unique product with spice and herbal flavors, it’s likely they didn’t intend to create a whole series. However, the design is appealing enough that I’d hope for more colorful, multi-flavored variations in the future.
