In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of Energie
As soon as you open it, a strong sour lemon scent fills the air. The lemon fragrance is incredibly intense and fills the entire room. The color is a light champagne gold, and the carbonation is strong with a lot of bubbles.
The taste is very lemony, with a tartness that makes you exclaim “sour!” each time you drink it. It has a rich, thick vitamin C drink flavor. In addition to the sourness of the lemon, there's an odd sweetness that lingers. It’s not a smooth, refreshing lemon soda, but rather a slightly rich and thick flavor. The carbonation, though it creates bubbles, isn't as intense as the amount of foam would suggest. It's still very sour! (๑´ڡ`๑)
Given this intense tartness and richness, you might as well just drink Keireto Lemon as it offers the same strong sourness. Keireto Lemon is something I usually drink when I’m really tired and craving something sour, so Energie also doesn’t seem like a daily drink. Instead, it’s something you might drink occasionally for a special moment.
Energy Ingredients of Energie
It contains no caffeine, but it includes 250mg of royal jelly and 5mg of imidazole dipeptide.
Imidazole dipeptide is an antioxidant found in chicken breast and is known to help with fatigue recovery. I wonder if that’s why it contains chicken extract? However, 5mg seems very low since the ideal daily intake is 200-400mg.
It also contains 23% lemon juice, which is quite high for an energy drink in Japan. The expiration date is relatively short, from March 30th to December 4th. The drink has a high amount of citric acid (2000mg) and vitamin C (1000mg), which adds to the Keireto Lemon essence. It’s great that it’s low in calories and sugar.
Design of Energie
Energie is a highly targeted energy drink for adult women.
The can is likely designed this way because most energy drinks are sold in cans. The yellow and black combination gives a strong, sleek impression, and I think it looks good.
At 190ml and with a cap, it seems to be intended for sipping slowly. It’s definitely too sour for a gulp, and the bottle cap is a smart choice. Energie, with its strong Keireto Lemon flavor, isn’t something you’d drink in large gulps, so I think the cap is a great idea.
The yellow can could be more stylish if the surface had a texture to resemble the roughness of a lemon, and the black stripe could be made of a matte material. I think if different textures were incorporated and made high-quality, it could appeal more to adult women.
Concept of Energie
Research conducted before developing Energie found the following:
- More than 70% of women want to drink energy drinks.
- However, the actual female consumer ratio of energy drinks is less than 30%.
Women want to drink them but don’t, due to various concerns.
The reasons why women avoid energy drinks include dissatisfaction with the container, volume, taste, design, and ingredient safety. Given all these complaints, it’s surprising they’d still want to drink energy drinks at all.
Energie was created to address these issues. Its strong lemon flavor, unique to Keireto Lemon, sets it apart from others.
The catchphrase for Energie is “For adults who want to face tough situations and enjoy overcoming them.” This phrase makes it feel more like a nutritional drink than an energy drink, and I believe this is what made it seem like a new product with a different angle compared to the original Keireto Lemon.
It feels like it was pushed into the energy drink category, and its price is higher than that of regular Keireto Lemon. I wonder when people will choose to buy this one?
