In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of Pepsi Energy Cola
The sweetness is very strong, and it feels different from the original Pepsi. It tastes like cola gummies themselves (;´∀`).
There’s a faint hint of bitterness and aroma in the sweetness, and it seems like the energy ingredients have intentionally altered the taste.
Whether it's good or not depends on whether you perceive this sweetness as an off-flavor. However, if you drink it slowly, you get used to it, so personally, I have no problem with it.
If you're drinking it normally, I prefer the taste of Pepsi Refresh Shot, which is almost identical to the original Pepsi. This one, of course, has a more conventional flavor, and at 100 yen, it's 50 yen cheaper than the Energy Cola.
Energy Ingredients of Pepsi Energy Cola
The caffeine content is 60mg, which is on the lower side, but definitely more than the 38mg in Pepsi Refresh Shot mentioned earlier. Other ingredients include royal jelly, ginseng, guarana, and a small amount of arginine.
Overall, it feels somewhat lacking. The arginine content is only 20mg, so it’s almost like it’s not there.
If they added a bit more energy ingredients and priced it at 150 yen, it would be a much more attractive energy drink.
Is there not much demand for cola flavor?
Unless you're someone who just can’t resist the feeling of wanting to "get an energy boost from cola," I don’t think many people would buy a 200ml energy cola for 150 yen. After all, you can often buy 1.5 liters of cola for under 150 yen at the supermarket.
People who like the distinct flavors of energy drinks might not repeat buy an energy cola either.
In the case of Monster's Cuba Lima, it's lime coke, so it’s a bit different, but in the end, cola is just cheaper to drink as cola, and this flavor might be fine to sell only as a Lawson exclusive.
