In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of Sparkling Sour Energy Drink with Carbonation
The contents are a bright, highly transparent yellow. Unlike the rich, traditional yellow, it gives off a refreshing impression.
When you take a sip, a strong sour, chemical-like flavor spreads. It’s a bit too sour and persistent. The taste is similar to the one you get when you used to mix citric acid powder into a sports drink. If the sourness were toned down, it could taste like a refreshing sports drink type.
The aftertaste leaves a lingering sourness with a slight chemical aftertaste. The flavor might be a bit hard to drink for some, and considering the product name "Sparkling Yunker," many might expect a "carbonated nutritional drink flavor."
Unlike the sweet, strong aroma and flavor typical of mainstream energy drinks, it seems this product intentionally has a flavor that feels "effective," like a nutritional drink.
Since this is one of Yunker's well-known nutritional drinks, "adding carbonation to a nutritional drink flavor with a refreshing taste" is exactly how Sparkling Yunker V tastes.
If you were expecting an orange or grape flavor when drinking it, you might be disappointed and think, "Isn't this just juice?" So, flavor preferences might vary, but as a sparkling Yunker, this flavor is probably the right choice.
Energy Ingredients of Sparkling Yunker V
It contains 105mg of caffeine, ginseng, guarana, Siberian ginseng, CoQ10, and royal jelly. It’s interesting because it includes classic ingredients that are rarely found in today’s Japanese energy drinks. These days, it’s almost like putting caffeine and arginine in everything, and calling it good.
Design of Sparkling Yunker V
The design reflects the carbonation, with bubbles rising. As the product name suggests, "Sparkling Yunker," it’s meant to convey the refreshing, carbonated nature of the drink, unlike a non-carbonated nutritional drink.
The product itself does not mention "energy drink" on the label.
Although the official product page does not say it's an energy drink, on the Yunker series list page, it does mention, "This is an energy drink that contains herbs such as Siberian ginseng extract and royal jelly."
Yunker is a well-known nutritional drink brand, and with carbonation and a can, it's easy to recognize it as an energy drink. However, the main focus seems to be on nutritional drinks, so it’s more like a side product.
In fact, I didn’t review it until now because when I first found it in 2017, it didn’t say "energy drink" on the label. But when I checked the official site, I saw the subtle mention that it’s "an energy drink," so I decided to add a review (^_^;)

However, it’s now in its fourth year, and it's still on sale. I’m surprised it’s still available.
