In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of Suppaiman Energy Drink
This is a zero-calorie collaboration drink with a Suppaiman flavor.
As soon as you open it, you can strongly smell the plum scent of Suppaiman. Perhaps it's easier to describe it as the scent of plum gum?
It is colorless and transparent, with no added color. The sweetness is mild due to the use of artificial sweeteners. The taste seems to faithfully recreate the Suppaiman flavor.
The sweetness and ume (plum) flavor are strong, and combined with the sweet plum scent, it feels like the Suppaiman flavor has been successfully replicated. To recreate this taste, I believe the strong Suppaiman scent, more than the sweetness and sourness, is quite important.
While drinking, I noticed a slightly smooth sensation lingering on my tongue, but I somewhat understood why after checking the ingredients later.
The sweetness is a light artificial sweetness typical of artificial sweeteners, and the sourness from citric acid and plum extract gives it a light ume flavor, similar to zero-calorie energy drinks. It’s a straightforward expression of the flavor (;´∀`)
Zero-calorie drinks are fine, but I think I would have been more impressed if there had been a richer flavor here(´・ω・`)
If the taste had a bit more tempo, I think I would have wanted to drink it again and again.
However, I often see it recommended for women due to its light taste, but personally, I’m not sure about that. It seems a bit off to say that light taste automatically makes it “for women”w
Energy Ingredients of Suppaiman Energy Drink
The front of the can lists the distinctive ingredients of Suppaiman Energy Drink. I wonder if this is called Suppaiman extract.
It’s caffeine-free, uses artificial sweeteners for zero calories, is colorless, and preservative-free, which gives it a somewhat natural composition.
As for typical energy drink ingredients, it contains guarana and 190mg of arginine.
It also lists royal jelly (130mg) and collagen. It seems that the collagen is included as gelatin, and the slightly rich texture on the tongue might be from the collagen.
Still Feels Like a Collaboration Drink
Overall, when you drink it, it gives off a somewhat ambiguous impression: is it an energy drink or a collaboration juice?
It feels like a fan product of Suppaiman in drink form, and it was released as an energy drink. Suppaiman seems to have other product lines, and this Suppaiman Energy Drink is one of those.
If there had been a cooler promotion, can design, or ad campaign more typical of energy drinks, it might have felt more like an energy drink. But considering the nature of Suppaiman's products, I think this can design is probably the best fit for the product. It's a tough one.
