Sweet Energy

Posted on April 11, 2014 | Last updated February 17, 2025

Sweet Energy
Since it’s from Ito En, the brand behind "Oi Ocha," I didn't take it seriously at first. "What kind of energy drink could this possibly be?" was my initial thought.
But then, a rich, sweet-and-tart blueberry-like aroma gently wafted up. Huh?

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Taste of Sweet Energy

It has a transparent purple color, which was a bit of a surprise. I was expecting something more like pink grapefruit. Let's try it at room temperature... huh?

Welch's!!! It's a refreshing, crisp cassis Welch's flavor. The taste is on the stronger side, but it's easy to drink. The aroma of cassis gently comes through, and it's very refreshing. The light carbonation and probably the ginger extract give it a double-refreshing effect. It's surprisingly delicious... (-_-;)

If you like berry-flavored drinks with a cassis aroma, I think you’d rate this very highly. It contains aronia, blueberry, and cassis fruit juices, and it’s also infused with the trendy acai extract.
The aftertaste isn’t overly strong like Welch’s, and it's pleasantly clean, which leaves a great impression and makes me want to drink it again.

I Wish Sweet Energy Was More Widely Available

How much is this? 160 yen, right? A bit expensive...
To cut to the chase, it’s really delicious, and I’d love to see it sold at a regular juice price with a 350ml size. I don’t think it even needs to be an energy drink, and there's no need to target working women. I’d like to see it sold as a long-lasting product.

Honestly, since it’s caffeine-free, it’s hard to tell who it’s meant for. There’s no strict definition that energy drinks need caffeine, but the fact that it’s caffeine-free means it targets almost every consumer, so I wonder why it’s priced this way... I hope it doesn't disappear like other drinks at 160 yen for 200ml with few repeat buyers. That would be really disappointing. (´;ω;`)

Sweet Energy’s Design

The color and taste were completely unexpected from the can design. Also, the catchphrase “The Energy Drink You Fall in Love With” got a lot of attention on social media. If that was intentional, it’s impressive! lol

Sweet Energy
And then there’s “Energy, Courage, Dreams” below it—kind of questionable, right? But after reading those words in my head about three times, I couldn’t help but laugh. They’re definitely going for something here... a deliberate move (-_-;)

The biggest wasted opportunity is definitely the can design. It could’ve had more of a premium feel. Thinking about it, Joma has great designs and promotions.
However, the taste is far better with Sweet Energy. I ended up drinking it really quickly.

It’s a shame that it’s only sold at FamilyMart. I’m sure there are reasons for that, but since it’s so delicious, it would be great if it could be available more widely, even online.

I used Sweet Energy as a Rich Energy Drink!
