In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of 42.195km Black
Upon opening, a sweet and sour, somewhat chemical aroma reminiscent of a classic energy drink flavor fills the air. The color is a slightly cloudy yellow. You can kind of guess the flavor right away. Let's take a sip.
When you take a sip, a dense, sweet and sour classic flavor fills your mouth, leaving behind a herbal bitterness reminiscent of traditional medicine.
Though there's a herbal or chemical scent, the taste itself lacks bitterness, offering a common sweet and sour classic flavor. If you're sensitive to the unique aroma, it may come off as a bit off-putting.
The flavor is quite similar to that of HOT6, a popular energy drink brand in Korea, which might have made it more acceptable in the Korean market. At the time of its release in Japan, it was part of the first energy drink boom, and the Silver variant of 42.195km made its debut. However, it seems that neither this Black version nor any subsequent editions have been continuously sold, and it no longer appears to be available in Korea either.
Energy Ingredients of 42.195km Black
Contains 75g of caffeine, 1200mg of taurine, and 30mg of red ginseng. 42.195km Black is an energy drink released by a company that specializes in ginseng research, with ginseng being the key ingredient. However, the amount of ginseng is so small that you might question whether it's even effective Σ(´∀`;)
Energy drinks are not necessarily meant to have dramatic effects but are more like concept drinks, so it's understandable. However, a little more ginseng wouldn't have hurt.
Design of 42.195km Black
The design is similar to the 42.195km Silver released in Japan, with a color difference—black. Given the product name and the silhouette of a runner on the label, it seems like it's aimed at runners. The overall vibe gives the impression that it targets marathon runners.
However, due to the rather underwhelming ingredients and the fact that it’s marketed as a product for full marathon runners, it seems like it wasn't actually designed specifically for them. As a result, it never really caught on in the runner's scene and has since disappeared.
