FLYING POWER 99% SUGAR FREE

Posted on August 7, 2023 | Last updated February 23, 2025

FLYING POWER 99% SUGAR FREE
FLYING POWER 99% SUGAR FREE is a sugar-free version of the original FLYING POWER energy drink from Germany's supermarket chain ALDI. This version has reduced the sugar content by 99%.

The product being reviewed here is sold at ALDI in Australia, and I’ve never seen the "99% SUGAR FREE" label in Australia before. Looking at the nutritional information, it contains only 0.3g of sugar. It's nearly sugar-free.

Most European sugar-free energy drinks tend to have a taste with little to no sweetness. While this product is sold in Australia, the manufacturer is European, so I wonder if it follows the trend of removing sweetness entirely. Let’s try it out and see!

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Flavor of FLYING POWER 99% SUGAR FREE

Opening the can releases a sweet and sour aroma typical of classic energy drink flavors. The scent is similar to that of FLYING POWER ORIGINAL. Let's take a sip and see.
Flavor of FLYING POWER 99% SUGAR FREE
Upon tasting, the flavor is a balanced mix of mild sweetness and a sharp, tangy taste, reminiscent of Red Bull.

Despite having almost no sugar, it tastes surprisingly good. Compared to the full-sugar version, it lacks the sweetness and chemical aftertaste, making it easier to drink. In fact, the taste might even be more refined in the 99% SUGAR FREE version.

The aftertaste leaves just the right amount of acidity without lingering. Thanks to the crisp acidity, there is no aftertaste, making it very enjoyable, even when chilled.

Zero-sugar versions of classic energy drink flavors often have a strong artificial sweetener taste, but FLYING POWER 99% SUGAR FREE avoids that and could easily be mistaken for a regular energy drink if not labeled as sugar-free.

Energy Ingredients of FLYING POWER 99% SUGAR FREE

It contains 78mg of caffeine, 1000mg of taurine, and 50mg of inositol. It only contains 0.3g of sugar.

Design of FLYING POWER 99% SUGAR FREE

The original version has a silver and red design, while the 99% SUGAR FREE variant uses a combination of light blue.

The design is simple, typical for a private brand product, with no frills. However, the matte texture does not give off a cheap impression. Quality texture is important.

In Australia, the prices for major brand energy drinks are excessively high. Even with exchange rate fluctuations, 500ml cans often cost between 500 and 700 yen. FLYING POWER, priced at about 70 yen per can, is a real price breakthrough. It would be interesting if more ALDI stores spread throughout Australia.
