FLYING POWER BCAA BLOOD ORANGE
This is my review of FLYING POWER BCAA BLOOD ORANGE, a limited-edition BCAA-infused sports energy drink released in 2024 by ALDI, a German supermarket's private label.
I purchased it during my trip to Austria in the summer of 2024. I never expected the FLYING POWER series to release a new 330ml sports-oriented product.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of FLYING POWER BCAA BLOOD ORANGE
Upon opening, a distinct, somewhat unpleasant grapefruit-like scent bursts out. The liquid inside is a transparent pink. It’s supposed to be a blood orange flavor, but the color is pink... What kind of taste does it have?
When I take a sip, I get a clear mouthfeel with a slight bitterness, reminiscent of bitter orange and bitter grapefruit, along with an artificial taste lacking sweetness or umami.
Perhaps due to the unpleasantness of the artificial sweeteners, the acidity feels somewhat low, and the drink fails to replicate the characteristic acidity of bitter orange flavor. The bitterness itself also doesn’t have much depth.
This product is designed as a zero-sugar, fitness-oriented energy drink, with BCAA as the main ingredient. Therefore, it might be best to imagine it as having a "not sweet" and "refreshing" taste, which is typical of European sugar-free products that eliminate sweetness and umami.
If you’re expecting the deliciousness of blood orange, most people would probably rate it poorly. However, considering the product's characteristics, it's safest to think of it as a "light-flavored sports drink with a blood orange-like flavor."
Energy Ingredients of FLYING POWER BCAA BLOOD ORANGE
It contains 103.95mg of caffeine, 1320mg of leucine, 660mg of valine, and 660mg of isoleucine.
This is a zero-sugar, ultra-low-calorie product. It seems to be a product in line with the fitness energy drink brands widely available in the U.S., reflecting the trends of 2024.
Design of FLYING POWER BCAA BLOOD ORANGE
The matte-finished blue can is combined with orange, reflecting the orange flavor, and features a simple, clear design.
It’s immediately apparent that this is a fitness-oriented, sports product with BCAA. There are no unnecessary elements, so it doesn't have the usual clumsy look of supermarket private label products. In a way, it's a refined design.
The FLYING POWER logo of ALDI’s private brand is placed in the upper right, and it also has a neat and cohesive appearance.
I wonder if a different designer was hired for this series? The design feels like a fresh new beginning for the brand, quite different from the original energy drink series.
I bought it at ALDI in Austria during the summer of 2024. Since it had just been released, it wasn’t in the energy drink section but instead was specially displayed near the register.
The packaging design and color were different, so I almost missed it. There was also a peach flavor released at the same time, but I didn’t realize there were two flavors and missed it. If it’s still available by the time of my next trip to Austria, I hope to grab it.
By the way, FLYING POWER BCAA is a limited-edition release, so it might be nearly impossible to get...
