Full Throttle ORIGINAL CITRUS
In 2018, Full Throttle Original underwent a design change from its signature orange can to this black-and-white look.

Now under the Monster Energy umbrella, let's take another look at Full Throttle Original.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Flavor of Full Throttle ORIGINAL CITRUS

Full Throttle ORIGINAL CITRUS
Cracking open the can releases a familiar, classic citrus-lime aroma. The liquid itself is a bright, glowing yellow—instantly recognizable as a citrus-flavored soda.

The first sip brings a burst of lime and lemon fragrance, followed by a sweet, mildly tangy taste. It has a similar citrus profile to Mountain Dew but with an even fresher lime essence. Honestly, drinking this again after a long time reminds me how good it is! (๑´ڡ`๑)

Interestingly, Full Throttle tastes great at any temperature. Whether at room temperature, chilled in the fridge, or ice-cold with plenty of ice, the citrus-lime flavor remains consistently delicious and refreshing.
Full Throttle ORIGINAL CITRUS
The stability of this original citrus flavor is impressive, and it's great to see that it remained unchanged even after Full Throttle joined the Monster Energy lineup. Regardless of sales numbers, keeping this brand alive was a smart move, and as a fan, I truly appreciate it.

Energy Ingredients of Full Throttle ORIGINAL CITRUS

Full Throttle ORIGINAL CITRUS
Contains 160mg of caffeine, with no additional energy ingredients—just a simple formulation. It also includes D-ribose, the same sweetener used in Japanese Monster Energy drinks.

Design of Full Throttle ORIGINAL CITRUS

Full Throttle ORIGINAL CITRUS
The design takes inspiration from the U.S. national emblem. After Full Throttle became part of the Monster Energy family, it switched to this design, which is distinctly American. It’s also available in Canada, where the North American aesthetic likely enhances its appeal.

If a limited-edition version featuring the U.S. flag were released for Independence Day, it would surely attract a lot of attention.

Comparing Full Throttle in the U.S. and Canada

From left to right: the latest Full Throttle design, the short-lived orange version released right after the Monster Energy acquisition, and the Canadian version.

Since I had all three unopened, I decided to compare them side by side.

Full Throttle ORIGINAL CITRUS
The color remains unchanged. I expected a slight difference between the U.S. and Canadian versions, but there’s none.

As for taste and aroma, they’re nearly identical. If anything, the U.S. version has a slightly stronger sweetness, but both deliver the same delicious, sweet-and-tangy lime flavor. Whether you're in the U.S. or Canada, you can enjoy the same great taste, so no need to worry about differences when traveling.

While the packaging has changed, the contents remain exactly the same.

There are, however, some differences in the energy ingredients between the U.S. and Canadian versions.
Full Throttle ORIGINAL CITRUS
The Canadian version contains slightly less caffeine (141mg) but includes 1892mg of taurine, which isn’t present in the U.S. version. While the taste remains identical, the energy blend does differ.

The U.S. version originally had an orange-colored can before switching to the current black-and-white design.
Full Throttle ORIGINAL CITRUS
Considering the drink itself is yellow, the orange can design didn’t make much sense. Later, Full Throttle introduced an actual orange-flavored version, which might explain why the original was rebranded with a black-and-white look.
