In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of G FUEL CRASH BANDICOOT WUMPA FRUIT
When opened, a refreshing apple scent gently wafts through the air. While the product doesn't list a specific flavor name, the official description says it's "Apple-Mango Flavor." Let's take a sip.
Upon tasting, the carbonation gives a sharp sensation, followed by a mild apple flavor that is neither sweet nor bitter, and lacks any umami. The apple scent is faint, but the flavor of apple itself is absent. Of course, no mango flavor is present either. It's a drink with no distinct flavor, and it’s difficult to express any taste.
Because it has a hint of apple-like scent, you can just barely perceive the apple flavor. If you're expecting apple, mango, or the fictional Wumpa fruit flavor from the game, you might be disappointed.
That said, I want to clarify that it's not bad at all (^_^); it works perfectly as a refreshing water without any strong flavors.
What’s missing is a distinctive taste. However, if you add plenty of ice, all the subtle flavors will disappear, and the apple scent will stand out, creating a refreshing apple flavor perfect for summer.
It wouldn't be wrong to say the taste is complete once the ice is added.
This collaboration with G FUEL is based on the "Wumpa Fruit" from the Crash Bandicoot game, so many fans may have high expectations about how it tastes in real life.
Considering that, I think many people will feel disappointed with this flavor.
I don't think many will want to repeat this. The flavor is just too subtle, and trying it once is enough.
Energy Ingredients of G FUEL CRASH BANDICOOT WUMPA FRUIT
It contains 300mg of caffeine, along with tyrosine and theanine, which are known smart ingredients. As an energy drink targeted at gamers, it has a high caffeine content and ingredients aimed at benefiting the brain.
Design of G FUEL CRASH BANDICOOT WUMPA FRUIT
The design features Crash and Wumpa Fruit dancing around. Unlike a simple character collaboration, the "Wumpa Fruit flavor" theme adds extra appeal as an energy drink product.
The idea of turning a product from the game into a real item is exciting, and imagining what it tastes like before drinking it adds to the fun. It would be interesting if more collaborations like this happen in the future.
G FUEL CRASH BANDICOOT WUMPA FRUIT comes in two types: one with a direct print on the can and another with simple wrapping. The left one has wrapping, and the right one is the direct print.
The earlier release came with a direct print in red. When I spotted the black-based packaging with simple wrapping and an orange Crash on it, I realized it was different from the earlier version I had already purchased, so I grabbed it.
Though the contents should be the same, I decided to compare them. When poured into a glass, the newly wrapped version is clearer and more transparent.
You can easily see the color difference from above. The version I reviewed (with direct print) has a slightly yellowish tint. Could the taste have changed...?
After trying both, I found no taste difference. Both versions have the same lack of sweetness and umami—just the Wumpa Fruit flavor.
It would have been nice if the lack of flavor was improved with the packaging update, but it seems this is just the way the Wumpa Fruit flavor is meant to be (^_^;)
