In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of Gas Monkey ENERGY DRINK Tropical
Upon opening, a sweet mango-like tropical fruit aroma bursts out. It has a rich, fruity scent that instantly brings to mind indulgent tropical fruits. ((o(´∀`)o))
Taking a sip, you get a mix of sweet and tangy mango, pineapple, peach, and passion fruit flavors. However, there's no real fruitiness—it tastes more like an artificial carbonated juice. It does come off as a bit cheap, with a clear reliance on sugar and citric acid for balance.
That being said, the initial scent might have set expectations for a more pulpy, dynamic fruit experience, but as a straightforward tropical fruit-flavored drink, it’s not necessarily bad.
Still, would I pay over 200 yen for this again? Probably not. If I were in the mood for a tropical energy drink, I'd go for a major brand that actually includes fruit juice. I imagine a lot of people would feel the same way.
Energy Ingredients of Gas Monkey ENERGY DRINK Tropical
Contains 160mg of caffeine, along with ginseng, guarana, and taurine. No fruit juice included.
Design of Gas Monkey ENERGY DRINK Tropical
The can features a persimmon-colored base with silhouettes of palm trees scattered across. But honestly, it doesn’t really scream “tropical.” And of course, the signature aggressive monkey logo is still here. (^_^;)
This kind of offbeat design, unusual color scheme, and niche branding might prevent it from going mainstream—but that’s exactly what makes it feel like a classic energy drink. It reminds me of the mid-2000s U.S. energy drink scene, with that slightly cheap but nostalgic vibe. I kinda love it. (*´艸`*)
