Posted on December 19, 2024 | Last updated January 27, 2025

GHOST ENERGY Welch's GRAPE
Released in September 2024. This is part of a collaboration series with major brands, and this time it’s a collaboration with none other than Welch's! I never expected a collaboration with such a well-established brand to happen.

What kind of Welch's grape flavor can we enjoy in this zero-sugar energy drink? Let's dive into the review right away.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Flavor of GHOST ENERGY Welch's GRAPE

Upon opening, the rich and intense freshly squeezed grape flavor reminiscent of Welch’s grape bursts out. Unlike the original Welch’s, the color of the liquid is a light yellow, typical of the GHOST ENERGY series, and it doesn't contain any artificial coloring. Now, let's take a sip.
Flavor of GHOST ENERGY Welch's GRAPE
When I take a sip, the sweet and tart grape flavor, with a touch of the skin's acidity and slight bitterness, gives a wonderfully authentic grape taste.

The first impression of the thick, rich grape flavor is quite strong, but as I take a few more sips, I realize that the sweetness of the flesh and the weight of the juice aren’t as overpowering as initially thought.

After all, GHOST ENERGY is a zero-sugar, no-juice drink.

That being said, the lasting grape flavor and the aftertaste that lingers in my mouth make me feel that the recreation of Welch’s grape is impressively accurate. While the taste itself has the lightness characteristic of zero-sugar drinks, each sip reminds me of the Welch's grape flavor, which may be due to the high quality of the flavoring.

The lasting aroma and acidity of the grape skin, along with its characteristic bitterness, definitely capture the essence of Welch’s grape.

The purple can evokes the image of Welch’s grape. On its own, this color would just resemble a typical grape flavor, but because it’s a collaboration with Welch’s, it gives off the distinct, rich purple associated with the brand.

The can’s surface is matte with a smooth texture, while the silhouettes of the graphics are glossy, creating a raised effect that makes the design pop.

Design of GHOST ENERGY Welch's GRAPE
The GHOST logo is beautifully embossed with a stunning texture. The tactile sensation when holding the can is excellent.

The Welch’s logo, which is also embossed, adds a three-dimensional feel to the design.

The back of the can carries the standard icons from the GHOST ENERGY series.

Typically, collaboration products feature icons that represent the partner brand, so I was curious to see how the back would be designed. However, it remains simple here.

Collaboration between GHOST ENERGY and Welch's

GHOST ENERGY has previously launched many collaborations with traditional snack brands, but I never imagined they would team up with the historic drink brand, Welch’s.

A recent news article highlighted that GHOST ENERGY was acquired by Keurig Dr Pepper, which was also covered by Energy Drink Mania. This made me wonder if there was any connection between Keurig Dr Pepper and Welch's, and it turns out there is!

Although Welch's is an independent brand, it’s manufactured by Keurig Dr Pepper.

With GHOST ENERGY now under Keurig Dr Pepper’s umbrella, it’s possible that the collaboration with Welch’s was easier to negotiate.

C4 ENERGY, which is also under the same umbrella, has collaborated with other brands from the same group. This suggests that we can expect many more diverse collaborations in the future from GHOST ENERGY.
