HELL ENERGY STRONG COLA

Posted on October 11, 2020 | Last updated February 7, 2025

HELL ENERGY STRONG COLA
The HELL Energy caffeine-boosted series was revamped in 2017, with the introduction of Strong Cola. Not only the design but the flavor was also updated, so I decided to compare it with the old Strong Cola.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Flavor of HELL ENERGY STRONG COLA

The recipe of the Strong Cola has slightly changed since the release of the gold-design version in 2014. The color inside doesn’t seem to have changed much.

When you take a sip, a subtle sweetness and a chemical scent spread in your mouth. The taste is not like the usual cola flavor but more like a chemical cola taste. It’s definitely different from the old Strong Cola.

A chemical aftertaste and an herbal-like flavor linger, with a subdued sweetness. It’s unclear if they added the chemical taste to emphasize the energy drink-like flavor or the unique taste of HELL Strong Cola, but it feels more like an off-taste and doesn’t come across as delicious.

If they wanted to make a chemical cola, I think a sharper flavor would have made the chemical taste and refreshment more enjoyable. In short, the cola flavor has become somewhat mediocre.

Flavor of the Original Strong Cola vs. 2017 Reworked Strong Cola

Let’s compare it with the initial Strong Cola, which was tasty with its original design. The color of the new Strong Cola seems to be slightly brighter.

When comparing the two, the sweetness and richness of the 2014 gold version of Strong Cola clearly win. The new Strong Cola has a lighter sweetness and a refreshing mouthfeel, which might make it easier to drink at first. But as the chemical flavor spreads, it becomes an acquired taste.

The ease of drinking and the lack of discomfort are clearly better in the original Strong Cola. Whether you think, "I’ll buy a cheap Coca-Cola instead" or "This chemical taste is irresistible," your preference will clearly vary.

Even without a comparison, you can tell the taste has changed. While it’s common for flavors and aromas to vary in intensity, it’s rare to see such a shift in direction. Personally, I prefer the old Strong Cola.

Design of HELL ENERGY STRONG COLA

A clear combination of blue, red, and white colors makes it obvious that it’s a cola flavor. The black vertical line is a common feature of the Strong series. Compared to the old gold and black design, the new one gives a more active impression.

This design strongly evokes the image when HELL Strong Cola was first reworked.

The new blue, red, and white color scheme has a sporty energy drink vibe, and the impression has definitely changed.

In addition to product design, I believe advertising design is also crucial. In Europe, it’s common to release multiple advertisements for a single product and continue branding it through stores and social media. This is not as common in Japan. As you continue to see the product in ads, you start to develop a sense of attachment, even to low-cost or lesser-known brands.

With the new design, the HELL logo silhouette has been added to the Strong Cola. It gives off a very refreshing vibe.

The tab is red, matching the cola theme.

The 2017 reworked HELL ENERGY STRONG COLA has been discontinued in some countries, and it seems that the sales haven’t been very high. Perhaps the chemical-like taste was just a bit too much.
