Energy Drinks and Urine

Energy Drinks and Urine
Drinking energy drinks often causes a sudden urge to urinate, making you need to go to the bathroom more frequently. Additionally, the color of your urine may turn yellow, resembling the color of the energy drink itself. This is an experience that almost everyone who regularly drinks energy drinks has gone through.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Why Urine Turns Yellow: Vitamin B2

It's a common story that drinking energy drinks results in yellow urine, the same color as the energy drink itself. This color comes from Vitamin B2, and there’s absolutely no problem with it.

Some people mistakenly believe Vitamin C is the cause, but that's incorrect since Vitamin C is colorless and transparent. Many products (like supplements or drink preparations) high in Vitamin C also contain a large amount of Vitamin B. Additionally, since Vitamin C is often associated with lemons (which are yellow), it's easy for people to mistakenly think their urine turns yellow from Vitamin C.

And don’t worry, yellow urine is completely normal. Red or black urine would be a cause for concern, though!

Why Urine Smell Becomes Stronger: Vitamin B2

If your urine becomes darker yellow and also starts to smell stronger, this is also due to Vitamin B2. There’s no need to worry at all.

However, if the smell becomes sweet, it could indicate a risk of diabetes. It’s almost impossible to develop diabetes just from drinking too many energy drinks, but it could be an indication of other factors. It might be a good idea to visit a doctor right away if you suspect this.

Why You Need to Use the Bathroom More After Drinking Energy Drinks

This is due to the diuretic effect of caffeine. With a typical amount of caffeine like in Red Bull (around 80mg), you’ll likely only need to visit the bathroom once or maybe twice (based on personal experience). However, with energy drinks like Rockstar, which contain more than 240mg of caffeine, you may need to go to the bathroom more frequently.

With bang energy drinks, the frequency of urination didn’t seem to increase much, though. But if you consume even more fluids alongside the 473ml of bang, you might notice more frequent trips to the bathroom!

Caffeine’s diuretic effect generally doesn't harm your body. However, energy drinks (or caffeinated drinks in general) are not ideal for hydration. That said, caffeine’s diuretic effect doesn’t dehydrate you to a dangerous level; your body maintains a balanced level of hydration, so it won’t be harmful to your health.
