KIIVA Yougrty (ヨーグリティ) is a limited edition product released in the fall and winter of 2020. It is the first energy drink in Japan to contain 10 billion lactobacillus bacteria. I’ve never seen anything like this abroad.

Lactobacillus-flavored energy drinks are unique to Japan, and this is one of many such products released over the years. Let's dive into how KIIVA’s lactobacillus-flavored energy drink turned out.

Flavor of Classic Refreshing Yogurt

When poured into a glass, the liquid is clearer than expected, resembling a sports drink. The scent is not overpowering either.

Upon tasting, it has a pleasantly tangy and refreshing yogurt flavor. I initially expected a rich taste like that of a thick, creamy yogurt drink, but as the name suggests, Yougrty feels more like sipping the lighter, clearer top of yogurt.

It doesn’t have the strong fermented flavor typical of probiotic drinks, and it’s not as heavy as drinkable yogurt. The taste is clean and refreshing, and it pairs perfectly with the carbonation.

In the past, there have been energy drinks with yogurt-like flavors, such as Calpis Soda ENERGY EX, Blackout Weiss, Matsukiyo RUN & GUN, and ZONe DEEP DIVE. However, KIIVA Yougrty stands apart with its clear and refreshing taste. The aftertaste is clean, with minimal residue, and the carbonation feels much better matched than in other similar products, making it easy to finish even the 500ml bottle.

Whether there is demand for a light yogurt flavor in the energy drink market is another question, but personally, I find KIIVA Yougrty to be my favorite in the KIIVA series. Among large-capacity 500ml domestic energy drinks, it offers the best balance of drinkability and taste, making it easier to finish compared to others.

It contains 160mg of caffeine, 450mg of arginine, and 10 billion Shield Lactobacillus bacteria. It's surprising that there are 57g of sugar in this light yogurt-flavored drink.

The Shield Lactobacillus used here is the same strain found in Morinaga Milk Industry's "Eat Series." Many of Morinaga's products also contain 10 billion Shield Lactobacillus bacteria, and many other companies offer products with Morinaga’s Shield Lactobacillus, including KIIVA Yougrty.

Shield Lactobacillus does not affect the original taste of the food and can be found in a variety of foods, such as natto, soups, and oden.

The bold design by Tommy Lim and the unexpected color combination that’s not typical for a yogurt flavor may not immediately suggest the fresh taste of Yougrty.

The light blue label that says “10 billion Lactobacillus” might appear like a sticker, but it’s actually printed directly. For some reason, this part seems a bit out of place.

Also, the product name is "Yougrty," not "Yogurty." I wonder why they chose to use "You" instead of "Yo"?

Tommy Lim’s design is based on black and white, but it seems that an infinite range of color variations could be created for each flavor. I’m looking forward to more new releases from KIIVA!
