Power Blend Coffee
This is a review of Wonder's energy coffee, Power Blend Coffee, released by Asahi, the company that sells Monster Energy in Japan. It's a high-caffeine coffee released during the Japanese energy drink boom.
It’s called "The Awakening Coffee Energy." With an astonishing 230mg of caffeine, it was one of the strongest in Japan when it was released in 2014.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of Power Blend Coffee
The taste is like a coffee milk, with a sweet flavor. The richness and heaviness are within the range expected for a domestic product. It's simply a delicious, sweet coffee beverage that can be enjoyed daily. As expected, there is absolutely no energy feeling.
Also, the 250ml long can is great. It has a satisfying drink volume. When it comes to energy or power, I want a large volume to really feel it. Small cans just feel a bit lonely (u_u*).
Energy Ingredients of Power Blend Coffee
What’s surprising is that it contains 230mg of caffeine in one 250ml can, which is the highest level in domestic energy drinks. It also contains a generous 300mg of arginine. This is quite a high concentration for an energy drink, and there’s no real competition in the domestic market. However, I don't think starting a caffeine war is a good idea. Some carbonated energy drinks in Japan are already promoting their higher caffeine content, so it feels a bit strange that this has become a defining feature of the product.
Good as an Energy Coffee
The taste, quantity, and ingredients are all good. It would be great if the price was a little more reasonable in addition to the high energy ingredient concentration. Power Blend Coffee is priced at 190 yen, which is typical, but it might show a difference compared to Kowa’s Power Coffee, priced at 150 yen. The volume difference makes it not exactly expensive, but it’s a bit of a mental barrier. At 190 yen or 200 yen, it feels a bit pricey for regular consumption. If I drink one can every working day (20 days a month), that’s 4,000 yen a month. Since the taste is just regular coffee, the main features are caffeine and arginine. It's a tricky situation.
Coffee products are just so easy to open.
