Matsukiyo Energy Drink EX STRONG CAFOON

Posted on February 11, 2019 | Last updated February 9, 2025

Matsukiyo Energy Drink EX STRONG CAFOON
Matsukiyo's private brand energy drink, the fourth installment in the EX STRONG series—EX STRONG CAFOON. It's pronounced "Kyafuun" despite being spelled "CAFOON."

As mentioned in the new product announcement, this drink was formulated with ingredients and flavors inspired by allergy season. Limited edition and offering a taste reminiscent of the bizarre flavors from the early days of the energy drink boom, here’s my review of Matsukiyo CAFOON (*´艸`*).

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Flavor of Matsukiyo Energy Drink EX STRONG CAFOON

The moment I opened the can, the artificial coloring splashed back onto the rim, and it seemed even more intense than the previous LOVE AND PEACE edition.

Pouring it into a glass revealed an unnervingly deep, paint-like blue—not the kind of color you'd expect from something meant for human consumption. Rather than looking like a typical energy drink, it had a borderline toxic appearance (^_^;).

The aroma is a fresh, citrusy lemon-lime scent. The drink contains "Jabara" citrus extract, which may be what’s giving off that impression.

At first, I expected a citrus flavor, but as soon as I took a sip, my entire mouth went ice-cold! The cooling sensation from the menthol rushes from my throat to my stomach, and the menthol aroma rises back up through my mouth. It’s reminiscent of the cooling sensation from Rising Cool, a drink from the early energy drink boom (*´艸`*).

There’s no sweetness, just a tangy citrus scent combined with the menthol chill inspired by Jabara fruit. The cooling sensation is so intense that it makes my stomach feel unsettled, almost as if my body is rejecting it… It’s not that it tastes bad, but it’s not something I feel the need to finish.

With its shockingly blue color and intense flavor, this one definitely belongs in the "Unpalatable" category. That said, it’s not entirely unpleasant—just something you have to experience for yourself while it’s still available in stores (u_u*).

Energy Ingredients of Matsukiyo Energy Drink EX STRONG CAFOON

Contains 162.5mg of caffeine, 500mg of arginine, 7.5mg of isoleucine, and uniquely formulated fermented black Jabara extract and sweet tea extract.

At first glance, the name "CAFOON" is puzzling, but it makes sense when you realize it’s a play on the word for pollen in Japanese—"kafun"—which turns into "Kyafuun" with a bit of exaggeration.

Jabara is a citrus fruit similar to yuzu, and the fermented black Jabara extract is made by fermenting it for several weeks. This fermentation process is said to enhance its components that may help with pollen allergies.

Sweet tea extract is also well known for its potential benefits in reducing allergy and nasal inflammation symptoms. While this drink won’t drastically improve allergy symptoms, it’s an interesting concept drink that clearly communicates its theme.

CAFOON Goes All-In on Its Gimmick

As a concept drink for allergy season, the name "CAFOON" is quite clever. The chosen ingredients are ones commonly associated with home remedies for allergies, and the intense menthol sensation gives the impression (strictly an impression) of clearing a foggy head and stuffy nose.

However, the over-the-top blue color makes this feel more like a novelty drink than a serious energy beverage—there’s no turning back now Σ(´∀`;).

There are plenty of blue energy drinks out there, but few have a shade as artificial as this one.

The flavor is also so unusual that it’s hard to find the right occasion to drink it. Honestly, one can is enough. Even as I write this review, I still haven’t finished mine. Normally, I end up drinking most of an energy drink while writing, but CAFOON is still sitting there, half-full ( ̄▽ ̄;).

Considering all this, it makes perfect sense that it’s a limited-edition, one-off product.

And, of course, it comes with the standard silver tab.
