Caffe MONSTER SALTED CARAMEL

Posted on November 19, 2019 | Last updated February 9, 2025

Caffe MONSTER SALTED CARAMEL
The Salted Caramel flavor from the Caffe series was released in the U.S. in 2018 as part of a new coffee lineup.

This product is positioned alongside coffee drinks in glass bottles, like those from Starbucks. It represents a symbolic series for Monster Energy as they introduced various products to capture the coffee market.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Caffe MONSTER SALTED CARAMEL Taste

Peeling off the label around the cap...

You can cut it horizontally just below the cap.

When you open the bottle, a rich, sweet caramel scent fills the air. By the time you pour it into a glass, the room is already enveloped in the sweet aroma.
Caffe MONSTER SALTED CARAMEL
The taste is just like the scent – creamy caramel sweetness with a smooth texture and a dense, rich mouthfeel. As for whether it truly tastes like salted caramel, that's debatable. It's more like a regular caramel milk coffee.

There’s hardly any coffee bitterness or aroma. The sweetness is full-on, and I don’t feel much of a difference compared to the JAVA series. I’m not sure if there was a need to create the Caffe Monster series at all (^_^;)

Caffe MONSTER SALTED CARAMEL Energy Ingredients

The drink contains 150mg of caffeine and taurine. The ingredients are simple for an energy drink. The product states 150mg of caffeine, but the official website lists it as 175mg, and it’s unclear which is correct.

A key feature of the Caffe Monster series is the use of 100% Arabica coffee and 10mg of Hawaiian coffee berry (coffee fruit) extract. Coffee berry is noted for its high antioxidant properties.

Caffe MONSTER SALTED CARAMEL Design

The cap is of the type that releases pressure when opened.

The front label depicts an image of warm coffee, but as written around the cap, the Caffe Monster series is meant to be “chilled, shaken, and enjoyed!” So, the image on the front doesn’t really match the contents.

The opening is large, making it easy to drink quickly.

Of course, the cap can be securely closed again. While it’s not recommended to carry it at room temperature after opening, it’s quite convenient to store it in the fridge temporarily without worrying about leakage.

The ingredient list on the back is printed on a transparent sticker, which is notable because the text has a tactile embossed quality that feels nice to the touch.

It’s not just any sticker, and the attention to detail is appreciated.

Since the glass bottle is clear, once you finish drinking, the empty bottle looks a bit sad as a collectible. If you choose to keep it, be careful of it falling and breaking due to earthquakes.

Comparison Between the Canadian and American Versions

About six months after the American release, the same three flavors of the Caffe Monster series were launched in Canada.

Let’s do a side-by-side comparison.

On the left is the American version, and on the right is the Canadian version. The color of the American version is slightly darker.

They looked almost the same when I bought them, but now that they’re lined up, you can really see the difference.

Taste-wise, the Canadian version retains a little more of the coffee bitterness and flavor, and personally, I found it easier to drink. The caramel sweetness is still prominent, but the coffee aspect is more balanced in the Canadian version.

Let’s take a look at the front label as well.

The American version says "Energy Coffee," while the Canadian version labels it "Energy Drink."

Caffe MONSTER SALTED CARAMEL Comparison Canada vs America
The cap part is similar on both versions, with only a few annotations on the side of the Canadian version.

As for the energy ingredients, the Canadian version contains 161mg of caffeine, 500mg of taurine, while the American version has different amounts. The coffee berry content is the same at 10mg.

The price is about $4 per bottle, so it’s not something you’d drink casually every day, but the weight of the glass bottle and the sense of holding it gives you the distinct appeal that comes with bottled coffee. While it’s a bit fragile, the appearance of the bottle makes it one of the best-looking coffee series released in recent years.
