JAVA MONSTER CHAI HAI

Posted on October 3, 2016 | Last updated February 12, 2025

JAVA MONSTER CHAI HAI
This is JAVA MONSTER CHAI HAI, produced in 2007 as the old version.
Among the non-carbonated "coffee + energy" drinks in the JAVA MONSTER series, CHAI HAI is the only one labeled as "tea energy" rather than "coffee energy."

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Flavor of JAVA MONSTER CHAI HAI

When poured into a glass, a strong cinnamon scent fills the air. It has the aroma of chai itself, with spices like cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and other herbs mixed into tea. This is unlike any other JAVA MONSTER flavor so far.

The color is a light, almost translucent shade that can only be described as chai. Along with the spices and tea aroma, it evokes the feeling of authentic chai. However, the murkiness—could it be the "divine powder" or the "devil's powder" due to aging?—is the unsettling part of trying an old product like this (ヽ´ω`).

Upon tasting, the cinnamon, ginger, and other spices burst through. Amidst this, there's a sweet, light milk tea flavor that goes down smoothly. It's not the thick, overly sweet taste typical of JAVA MONSTER.

While the spices, like cinnamon and ginger, help create a chai-like aroma, they don't add a spicy kick to the flavor. The blend of chai-esque aroma, sweetness, and tea flavor creates a taste that, as anticipated, could divide opinions. After tasting it, I felt that this flavor probably wouldn't become a long-term bestseller.

I've had chai in Indian homes a few times, and compared to that, CHAI HAI is much more approachable for the average person. Perhaps it's trying to capture the essence of chai while not going too far into the "chai" territory.

Energy Ingredients of JAVA MONSTER CHAI HAI

It contains 188mg of caffeine, 2000mg of taurine, 400mg of ginseng, carnitine, guarana, and maltodextrin, among other ingredients.

Since this is chai, it’s labeled TEA + ENERGY, not COFFEE + ENERGY. While there is some tea extract, it’s odd that it doesn't contain any distinctly chai-specific ingredients. In fact, with this, it's no longer really part of the coffee energy series, right? Σ(´∀`;)

Milk-Based Old Energy Drinks Are Intense

Although CHAI HAI has been in production since 2007, the version I reviewed was from the early 2010s. Even in 2010, it had already aged significantly, and the degradation was obvious—it's pretty bad.

That said, it's rare to review something that’s over 10 years old, so I feel this is valuable information to share. But honestly, I’d avoid older milk-based energy drinks if possible.

JAVA MONSTER, especially the early versions, had many discontinued products, and reviewing them all means I’ve had a lot of moments where I’m thankful to still be healthy after drinking them! I can’t help but laugh at myself!

This distinctive pattern and the dull green color—it feels unusual even among the countless energy drinks I’ve tried worldwide. I’m sure the strange design only heightened my unease about the product! (^_^;)

The chai itself is polarizing, and I imagine that’s why it didn’t gain many repeat customers. I think most people would rather make chai at home or order it at a restaurant, rather than buying a Monster Energy drink for it. Despite this, it's a fascinating product that represents an interesting moment in energy drink history.

JAVA MONSTER CHAI HAI
Today, this is one of the rarest JAVA MONSTER flavors. Along with it, other rare JAVA MONSTER products include CHAI HAI, NUT-UP, and LO-BALL. More recently released but still rare ones are ORIGINALE, BIG BLACK, RUSSIAN, and TOFFEE. I was able to buy TOFFEE at the beginning of the 2014 Energy Drink Tour in Los Angeles, but when I visited the same store in February 2016, it was, of course, no longer available!

When trying older products, make sure you're mentally prepared before drinking them! (laughs)
