In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of JAVA MONSTER VANILLA LIGHT
Upon opening, the aroma and flavor hardly resemble coffee at all. It feels more like drinking a very sweet (almost too sweet) coffee milk. The flavor is mostly a mix of milk and milk-based sweeteners, which makes me wonder if this should even be called a "coffee" series... I'm a bit confused (-_-;)
The milk sweetness isn't the heavy, rich kind typical of American products, but more of a light, easy-to-drink sweetness, just as the "light" label suggests. With all the various international coffee energy drinks I've tried recently, I wonder if my sense of sweetness has gotten a bit skewed...
When I tried drinking it quickly, I could taste a bit of coffee's bitterness, but... no, it's definitely overpowered by the milk's sweetness. It’s more of a caramel flavor than coffee, I think.
That said, I find the VANILLA LIGHT easy to drink because the sweetness doesn't linger too strongly after finishing. I finished 443ml in about 5 minutes (*´ェ`*), which is something I can't do with regular JAVA MONSTER (;´∀`)
VANILLA LIGHT is LO CAL
The can features "LO CAL" on the right side, suggesting that it’s made with fewer ingredients. Looking at the ingredients, it does indeed have only 100kcal and fewer carbs than typical coffee energy drinks, which is surprising given how sweet it is. I think the reason the sweetness doesn't linger is because it’s low in calories and carbs.
The name "VANILLA LIGHT" might suggest that it’s a low-sugar version of the regular "Vanilla," but in fact, there’s no product called "JAVA MONSTER VANILLA."
It’s actually a version with fewer calories and carbs compared to JAVA MONSTER MEAN BEAN, which is the baseline for its sugar content.
Personally, I find the sweetness that doesn't leave an aftertaste, like in VANILLA LIGHT, to be the easiest to drink.
