MONSTER ENERGY DRAGON TEA WHITE TEA
This is the new release from Monster Energy in 2019, the White Tea from the Dragon Tea series.
It seems like this has spun off from the "White Dragon Tea" released in 2018 as part of the Rehab series and has become a full series.
This time, I am comparing it with the Rehab White Dragon Tea, and also tasting the Canadian White Tea, which was released ahead of the U.S. version, all three at once.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of MONSTER ENERGY DRAGON TEA WHITE TEA
Upon opening the can, the scent is not as strong as other flavors in the Dragon Tea series (Green Tea, Yerba Mate), and it has a more subtle impression. The color is a pale barley tea-like shade.
When you taste it, the flavor is a gentle and simple black tea with a hint of sweetness. The aroma and flavor are overall subtle. The aftertaste doesn't linger and fades away, leaving only a faint black tea aroma.
If you add ice, the flavor can be diluted, so refrigerating it should suffice.
Having tried the three flavors so far, I can confidently say that the Dragon Tea series has completely moved away from the overly sweet tea flavors for Americans and instead focuses on letting the taste of the tea leaves shine, as I confirmed with this White Tea. The Green Tea and Yerba Mate in the same series follow this direction as well.
That said, the flavor is so subtle that some people might not feel satisfied with it. I'm even a bit concerned about whether it will sell well in America due to its natural taste. Personally, though, I think this level of subtlety is fine (^_^;)
Energy Ingredients of MONSTER ENERGY DRAGON TEA WHITE TEA
It contains 155mg of caffeine, taurine, ginseng, carnitine, and other typical energy blend ingredients.
The powdered tea extract, which tends to settle, is well-mixed by shaking, so the 473ml can actually contains 458ml. The White Tea I tried did not have an impression of excessive sediment.
Design of MONSTER ENERGY DRAGON TEA WHITE TEA
The pink dragon and Chinese characters are distinctive. It’s quite debatable whether these dragon and character designs are necessary for this series. It feels like they brought the colors of Rehab's White Dragon Tea straight into Dragon Tea.
Because of this, I was expecting a fruity flavor like Rehab's, but it was completely different, with a proper black tea taste. I don't think it was necessary to keep the color the same as Rehab's. Since Rehab and Dragon Tea are completely different products, I think it would have been better to change the color. It’s a bit confusing.
The can has a black top with a pink tab. While there's also a white top with a black tab version of White Tea, I prefer the vivid combination of black and pink.
Comparing Three Types of White Tea
For this review, I compared three types of White Tea: the Dragon Tea White Tea, Rehab's White Dragon Tea, and the White Tea Dragon Tea released in Canada.
Interestingly, Dragon Tea White Tea was released in Canada before the U.S.
Differences in Scent Between Dragon Tea and Rehab
From left to right: Dragon Tea White Tea, Rehab White Dragon Tea, and Canadian Dragon Tea White Tea.
When lined up, you can see that the U.S. Dragon Tea has a lighter color.
There is also a significant difference in scent. The U.S. White Tea has a subtle black tea aroma, while Rehab's White Dragon Tea has a rich, fruity scent, and the Canadian Dragon Tea White Tea also has a strong fruity aroma.
The U.S. Rehab and Canadian Dragon Tea are almost indistinguishable in color and scent, so if you shuffled the glasses, you wouldn't be able to tell them apart.
Clear Flavor Differences
Just as there are clear differences in scent, the flavors of Dragon Tea and Rehab are also very distinct.
Rehab has a strong fruity flavor that overshadows the black tea taste. Compared to Dragon Tea, Rehab's White Dragon Tea feels more like a refreshing, non-carbonated fruit juice rather than a proper black tea.
Similarly, the Canadian Dragon Tea White Tea also has the same fruity flavor at the forefront. Its scent and flavor are nearly identical to Rehab's, making it seem as though they took Rehab’s flavor and simply rebranded it as Dragon Tea for Canada. The similarities are so striking that it's quite surprising.
Rehab contains a small amount of fruit juice (4%), allowing for the fruity taste. You can clearly see from the ingredients that Rehab and Dragon Tea are completely different products.
While Dragon Tea's simple and refreshing flavor may not be to everyone's taste in America, I think the series does a great job at focusing on the essence of the tea leaves, with the fragrance and aftertaste not lingering too much. I look forward to new flavors being added to this line.
