In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of MONSTER ENERGY Extra Strength Black Ice
Despite its cool blue design, opening the can reveals a sweet strawberry aroma. However, there’s also a strange sour note that immediately catches attention. This unexpected acidity lingers in the scent, making for a surprising first impression.
Black Ice is Surprisingly a Strawberry Flavor
That unplaceable sourness carries over into the taste, effectively recreating the sweet and tangy profile of strawberries. (It briefly gives off a natural impression, but it’s clearly an artificial flavor.)
Overall, the drink is light rather than rich, resembling a slightly diluted strawberry smoothie. Yet, despite this lightness, the aroma is notably strong, showcasing the distinct intensity of the Extra Strength series.
However, the can is an ice-cold blue, the liquid is a standard yellow, and the foam is abundant... Something about this combination feels off. There’s a lingering sense of visual and flavor mismatch.
If the can were pink and the liquid had a soft pink hue, the visual and taste experience would align better, making it more enjoyable. After all, just looking at this review and these photos, would you ever expect a sweet and tangy strawberry flavor? (´・ω・`)
Energy Ingredients of MONSTER ENERGY Extra Strength Black Ice
As indicated on the can, Black Ice is zero-calorie. Its carbohydrate and sugar content is only 5g, making it a low-carb energy drink.
With that in mind, everything aside from the strawberry flavor does feel light, giving it a diet-friendly energy drink vibe. Still, the surprisingly realistic strawberry taste is anything but ordinary (-_-;)
